This afternoon when I left work I had no power, which it seems like I get that alot when the engine is cold, about 10 miles into the trip I could feel the engine surge and then after that it ran great with plenty of power. When I say no power I mean pedal to the floor and doing 55-60 on the interstate. 90 yj tbi 2.5 with ax5. Anybody have any ideas? thanks

Start with the basics.  Fuel & Spark then work from there.  Does it idle?

idles fine, I just have to keep the rpms up to keep accelerating. It doesn't have no power at all, it's just lacking alot.

Would a dirty air filter have any effect like this?

to me if the air filter were restricting it would not idle fine, but thats cheap to change out anyway.  Check that first as a paper filter is not much.  After that I would check your fuel system.

i have a 90 yj 3.5l and when i got it it ahd a paper air filter that was totaly cloged with crap... looked like a rats nest :shock:... and it oviously wasnt good but it didnt efect the idle..

You should change your fuel filter while your at it. I did mine last week and my filter was really bad, blew out dark fluid and not that easy to blow through. Filter cost under $10 and really easy to change. Its right in frount of the rear wheel and all you need is a 10m socket and a flathead screw driver. As long as your Jeep is 95 or older because 97 and newer do not have external fuel filters.

thats a good idea.. now that i think of it.. i may do this on miojne. and ill get a nice smaler fuel filter so i dont have the huge metal one

I just changed my air filter last week, and I had the problem before and after the change. I probably need to change the fuel filter anyway, since I don't know the history of it. But I don't think that is going to solve my problem, it only runs week for about the first ten minutes, after that it runs fine.

My ole dodge dakota did that, would be humming along fine till it warmed up, then wham, it was like I was dragging a boat.  Ended up being the throttle position sensor. Get your codes checked. Mine didn't even thow the check engine light.

I'm not completely sure how to explain this but I've heard it before:  As the engine is heating up the computer has the engine running differently.. like warm-up mode or something  ..  then once its to regular temperature it changes some settings and is in "regular mode".  I'm wondering if there is some issue with a sensor or anything during the "warm up mode" of the jeep that may be causing your problem?  But you're right if it was something like a filter of any kind I'd think the problem would be apparent at all times not just in the first 10 mins of operation.

I'm not the most mechanical literate so I may be completely wrong ..  :roll:
