okay....trying to remove my old steering damper. Got the part off the axle.
Removed the cotter pin and unscrewed the nut on the drag link side...should that side now just push up out of the drag link?? Maybe mines just stuck as it has been in there for 6-7 years. I've been whacking it with a mallot and it doesn't seem to be budging.
Figured I'd ask before I screw anything up. Thanks.

It's a press fit. A puller would work but you can use the hammer method. Hit the bulging part, not the bolt. Using two hammers from two sides will help loosen it. Then put the nut back on and thread it on a few turns. Then give it a wack.

well..as usual...I'm way too impatient and whacked the crap out of it and can't get the nut back on...that thing is tighter than hell. I'll try prying from the top tomorrow...I don't think I have to worry about it coming out on it's own... :lol:

well..as usual...I'm way too impatient and whacked the crap out of it and can't get the nut back on...that thing is tighter than hell. I'll try prying from the top tomorrow...I don't think I have to worry about it coming out on it's own... :lol:
:thumb: You flared the end of the bolt! You basically flattened out the divot in the end of the bolt. That's where the puller sits in.

I didn't flatten it that much....just mangled it enough so the bolt won't go on all the way...I think I will be able to get it off over lunch if I try hard enough.

You need to hit the bulging part of the tierod next to where the bolt goes though, at a 45º angle to the bolt. This temporarily egg shapes the hole and allows the bolt to fall out.
Use a BFH, you ain't gonna hurt it. Works great on tierod ends too, any taper fit.

The other option would be to use a punch and impact the bolt dead on. The punch will localize the impact so the power isn't wasted.

Christ...used the punch and now I have a nice indentation in the center of the bolt...thing won't budge one bit. Looks like I'll have to get a puller and push it through.
A standard pitman arm puller should be able to sit cock-eyed on the bar enough to get it down....was that what you were talking about Jeffy?? Or is there a different puller (smaller) for this job?

Well, I've used a two arm puller but a friend of mine used a pitman puller also. It should work well enough.

Well...went to AutoZone to borrow a tool...they had a smaller puller (it said Pitman arm/tie rod puller)...brought it out to the Jeep to make sure it would work and it was a perfect fit.
Brought it home and had the damn thing off in about 10 seconds....I can actually tell a difference with the new dampner.
