Title: Seatbelt
Post by: Chad on October 19, 2006, 01:28:13 PM
I am curious even though its the law to wear your seat belt and they save lives, I just hate wearing mine in my jeep, i'll wear when I'm offroad but when i'm driving through town on a nice day with the top down and the doors off, I just can't wear my belt, its like it ruins the whole having no doors on experience.

I voted and I said; "seat belts everytime, everywhere and all the time".  Won't move the vehicle without the kids buckled up.  I'm sure that there are some instances that wearing it could f' me up, but I think, in my mind, that those instances don;t even come close the weighing the instances that it'll save mine, or my kids lives.

I wear my seatbelt ALL the time.  I just don't want to be flying through the windshield in an accident.  Or more likely, crumpled up on the hood...  If the doors and top are off, you'd be ejected out the top.  Depending on the speed you'd be doing your superman impression onto the road.  Presumably in shorts and a T-shirt. If the vehicle rolls over, you could be half ejected and end up between the rollbar and the road.  (This happened to a Jeeper in the past few months actually.)

I've also seen some people drive with their left foot on the friggin dash.   Saw this with a guy TOO!     Some people (I don't necessarly mean anyone here) don't take driving serious enough.  You get the unattentive drivers who are busy doing everything else but driving.  Those are the ones you have to worry about.

The other reason I wear my seat belt is that I don't like the feeling of sliding around in my seat.  It distracts too much from the driving experiance.  It would be like driving a performance car while sitting on your couch.  :lol1:

So stay safe and don't become this guy...  :gimp:

Oh and not married nore do I have kids.  Although I'm not at the bulletproof age anymore either.

Just found out that TJRon from JU was killed in a rollover accident a couple days ago.

It was reported that he wasn't wearing his seat belt, and was thrown out of the vehicle.

I don't know for sure, but I have seen pictures and video of him without his belt on while wheeling.

It doesn't make you good or bad in my eyes whether you wear you seat belt, but if you roll, or your rig shifts abrubtly, it can make you dead.

I don't want to lose any of you to something as stupid and tragic as this.

This was a post over at my clubs website. I thought it fit in well here. :(

Always have worn one and always will...especially without doors...I would feel like I was going to fly out every time I turned a corner (and I go doorless all summer).

always wear it i hate the feeling of sliding around on my pleather seats.  only time i dont wear it is if i am backing up a trailer, or backing up period.  if i am topless and doorless i wont drive without my passengers in my car buckled up,if i take a turn to fast, they will be out of the car.  I took my brother for a ride once and almost lost him out the door doing less than 10 mph

People were smarter and tougher back then.  They also didn't complain about not having A/C, cruise control and a stereo.  When they got into an accident and flew 50ft into the air they just got back off, dusted themselves and got back in.

On the trails I convert my shoulder seat belt to a lap belt using a child's seat belt conversion. Its shaped like a 'I'.

I always put the should belt behind the seat to get it out of the way when wheeling.

well i always wear mine on or off road.  in a jeep, the doors and top are not gesigned to contain you in a crash or rollover situation.  i would not risk my life that way.  i was on my way home from the dirt track one sat night and i saw a car off the side of the road so i stopped to see if i could help. well, a guy in a saturn hit an enbankment head on.he and the passenger were wearing their seatbelts and the airbags deployed.  she died on impact and the driver (her boyfriend) got his leg broken very badly.  she had two kids that were less than 6 years old.

Needless to say i didnt sleep that night  but i did learn something from that.  if someone can be killed in an airbag equipped car while wearing their seatbelt the YOU dont stand a fighting chance in a Jeep or any other vehicle without a seatbelt.  they might not be the most comfortable thing in the world but when something disatrous happens,  it will help save your life.

I NEVER even leave the driveway without my seatbelt on if i am in the jeep.  there are too many IDIOTs on the road with their cell phone glued to their ear and their radio Blasting some "BUMP" and not paying attention.

Be safe and have fun...That is what jeeping is about

Up until about 2 years ago I hardly ever used the seatbelts. Something changed and now I wear them all the time. I rolled a car a few years back. Tipped it back over on it's wheels and then drove away. This was before I was wearing the belt on a regular basis. For some reason I had it on that day. Guess it's good that I did.

Only problem I see with that is sometimes the belt will tight through the 'sleeve' that clips in. Then the gravity lock will lock the belt and you can't loosen the tight belt till you get flat once again.
Where as converting to a lap belt, I can clip/unclip all day long at what ever angle. I can get in/out with the Jeep tilted.

Ok, the other trick is to take a binder clip and clip the top of the belt where it loops though the rollbar. 'A' thing.  This will keep enough slack to prevent the belt from locking up when on an incline.

This was before they made those clips for kids.

See that's one of the thing I worry about a bit.  With a harness it typically it will have fixed length straps.  If you're able to move much at all, they're not tight enough.  If their too loose they won't work right.  Although when offroading on some semi hard stuff you will want to be able to see out on occasion.  Most Jeepers I've seen prefer using lap belts only for most things.  Only those really hard core stuff would they dawn their harness.  Otherwise the harness is too restrictive.  Then again with most harnesses, you can use just the lapbelts alone.

picture this...im on a trail with my 7yr old son. Hes riding in the front and i got in a little bit of a sticky situation nothing drastic but in an really bad postion. So i parked it. looked at it and gathered my line like we all have done 1000 times over. I got back in and was ready to start wheeling again...my son all of a sudden yelled "DAD!"....i replied "what son"..looking at him with this confucled look on my face he says ..."moms going to get mad if i have to tell her u didnt have your seatbelt on"....so he doesn't go wheeling with me anymore...oO(rat me out to momma..ill fix his butt)....so i buckled in and as soon as i started to move sure enough the rig took a abrupt change in roll.....so i guess he should come along...

so he got McDs kids meal....i got heartattack and a sence of why i take him

i generally use as much of the harness as i need.  i use the entire thing when on climbs and loosen it when on the normal stuff.  i have the straps so i can move but remain in the bolstering of the seats and then pull them tight if i go to a big climb and start using a spotter.  i have seen regular seatbelts release at the wrong time and i just don't trust them in a roll
