Title: headgasket oil leak

i have a 1989 yj 2.5 its leaking oil from the headgasket on the passanger side anyone else have this problem it still runs good just leaks oil should i try to re torque the head bolts or will i have to do the headgasket

depends on if it is really leaking or just seaping a little oil.  i have seen the head bolts work out slightly but i would just pu a gasket on it at that age.

funny thing is i have the same thing with my 90 yj... its weird throw cuz it looks like it comes out of the middle of the head which would lead me to believe its from the valve cover but i just got one a year ago....

thing is i don't drive my jeep enough to keep up on everything thats wrong on it.

oil is not supposed to be coming from your head gasket. it is supposed to stay below the piston rings. If it is in your piston ring you will have excess smoke burn out through the tail pipe.  if not it is something else?

no its coming from the head the valve cover is not leaking its just on the passanager side i replaced the distrubitor gasket valve cover ect steamed cleaned it and its coming from between the head and block :?

you can pressure test the system. i know they have something to test the coolant system pressure, and you can get or rent a spark plug compression tester. i cannot remember if its the water or oil jackets that are closer to the outside edge. water jackets surround the pistons so , oilis on the outside i guess.

Well, that's not true.  There are water jackets as well as oil jackets in the block and head.  How else are the rockers and valves going to get oiled?  I'm betting it's a weak spot in the gasket near an outer oil jacket.  If you check the oil and there is no antifreeze in it, then it probably isn't leaking internally.     I'd probably try re-torquing the head and see if that works.  If seeping and not leaking bad then you could probably drive with it for a while, just remember to top off occasionally.  Although the best solution would be to take the head off and replace the gasket.

no oil in the water i cleaned the head real good drove it and it is the head its wet along the head gasket i'll try to re torque the head if that does not work i guess its time to replace the gasket thx everyone for the help
