hey folks,
just wanted to get confirmation to set my mind at ease. was interested in putting a locker in the front d30. i have a 95yj with the cad. question is if i put a lunchbox locker up front will i even notice it if i am not in 4wd? since the axle has the disconnect i would think it would be invisible. the other issue is...will it cause my front driveshaft to spin while in 2 high? right now i am under the impression that the spider gears are the only things moving and the driveshaft stays stationary, but if i put in the locker will this change?

i think it will cause your drive shaft to turn in 2wd.. hmm wait now im questioning myself.. aw im so confused. :brick: .. too much homework sindrum

i welded the spider gears in mine and the only difference is that the driveshaft spins all the time.  you will hear a faint whine from the driveshaft but thats all.  if your exaust is loud like mine you wont even hear that!!LOL

Run an Aussie in my D30 and am not locked in the rear, currently.  My front Aussie is invisible in 2wd, as far as I can tell.  Whether my front axle is powered or not, my locker's differential action appears to work the same - outside wheel is allowed to rotate faster than the inside wheel when turning. Only difference between 2wd and 4wd when driving with an autolocked front end (when turning) is that the front, "inside" wheel will be powered when in 4wd, but not when in 2wd.

Also, it sounds like you are not going to hit a bunch of ice and snow any time soon.  But, be careful driving if you use a front autolocked Jeep on slick road surfaces at higher speeds while in 4wd.

thanks for the replies. i am leaning in the direction of an aussie locker too. cant see locking the rear until i upgrade the axle.

the reason you feal the shaft spin with welded spiders is because it is always locked.  an auto locker dissengages when not in 4wd so you will be find with the auto locker

ahh i see.  but if tjs and older cjs have 1 piece shafts with no disconnect wouldnt their front DS spin all the time also?  Not trying to Hi-Jack you thread

one piece axles will spin if you weld the spider gears but not with an auto locker.  an auto locker stays unlocked untill power is applied to them.;  therefore in 2wd no power is being transferred to it so it stays unlocked.
