I went to the hardware store to get a key made today for my ignition in a '99 TJ. The told me it was likely a chip key and would not start the engine. I had it made any way, since I didn't really believe that was true for jeeps, I had heard that ford was doing this a while ago, but not Jeep. Any way, the lady made me the key and said it would at least open the doorlocks. I smiled, paid for the key and went out to start my Jeep. It started right up....and proceeded to run for 4~5 seconds and DIED!!!! I could not believe it! I thought my '99 was old school, but NOT! I went home and searched hi and low and found my spare 'chip' key. Has anyone else run into this? Hold onto your keys and listen to the hardware store lady!

It just depends on the options,my 06 keys don't have it as I use a spare on another set of keys 50% of the time.BTW the "chip" keys are much larger,that's how the lady knew........................... :D

chips keys are retarded in my opinion.. just extra unneeded electronics...
my jeep has a good lol gm key for it....lol gm for jeep.

don't keeptrying to use a non programmed key. you will get a check engine light from using the wrong key eventually. in the cars even putting the key in the door lock will throw a code. it is all theft issues but just think of it this way. it is hard to steal a car when the ignition won't turn on without the proper key. you have to go to a dealer and have the key programmed to your ignition. it is pricey for a key but if it is done wrong it can go into security mode and you won't get it started for about 4 hours straight no matter what key you use. believe me i had an apprentise put in the wrong code then had to explain to customer why her car was staying for a couple hours just for a key.
