Title: Fuel Issue
Post by: cromwell on January 06, 2007, 05:07:17 PM
Well I picked up my Jeep from the port and did notice a couple of issues. My speedo was off by about 5 MPH.  My wife was in front of me traveling at 50 and the Heep registered 45. So It looks like I will be purchasing a new speedo gear. Second is it drank gas!!! I used a half a tank just to travel approx 65 miles. So I will be doing a tune up. Good thing I ordered plugs, wires, rotor and cap.  Is there anything else I should be looking at/for the Heep has just over 92K on it.  The only code that comes up is 65 for high pressure power steering.

with 30" tires the speedo will be off by 5 mph, and jeeps get crap millage, i get like 150 to a tank of gas, so your jeep doesnt sound out of the ordinary.

i have 31's and i got about 180 miles on my last tank.. but my current one is going to be less.

15 gallon tank.. and that was when i had a gas vent leaking...

Swapping the speedo is simple.  Check the DIY for the tooth count and install info.

As for mileage, I can usually get 220miles out of a tank.  I don't trust the gas gauge and have a few gallons left.  I've had 300 miles on one tank, although I've got a 20 gallon tank.

I have 31's and am 5 mph off at 70 (really going 75...verified on the GPS).

That is horrible mileage...I'm more in line with Jeffy...in the 250 range per tank and I usually have more than a gallon left in there...stupid gauge....

I just filled up.  With 14 gallons I had around 230 miles...

I drove close to three hundred on a full tank with my 19 gallon tank. I usually also have gas left over still in the tank.

I use to get between 15-20 miles per gal or about 250-300 miles and that was while I was in Wyoming.  Now that I am in Ireland and at sea level, it gets far less then the norm.  And with gas prices here at approx $5.20 a gallon if I can not figure it out I will have to get rid of it and that is something I do not want to do.

So the first thing I am doing is replacing the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, along with the air filter.  The entire exhaust system along with both o2 sensors were replaced about a 18 months ago, so hopefully they are still good.

And for those who would say just get a DD. Insuring and registering vehicles in Ireland is not the same as in the states.  Here you are only allowed to insure one vehicle per driver.  So since my wife has the other vehicle it is either fix this issue or I will have to say goodbye to my friend.  And since I am over here that means to the crusher.

Please dont send you baby to the crusher!  Bad gas mileage and spluttering and such on mine was caused by my family not putting the plug wires right on mine after changing it.  Make sure they're seated properly and the plugs are still good.  Champion plugs are also known to be the best for them.  The platinum junk doesen't work well for these motors.  Also, check your OBD II codes if possible, I dont think it should show any though.  Finally, if all else fails, can you take the insurance off of it and then put it back on it at a later time (once you get the issues fixed and upgrade it like you want it?)

Jaggedfel,
If it is not insured then it can not be registered.  The plugs that I have alway used are splitfires since that is what came in it when I bought it 11 years ago.  The only code it is throwing is a 65 for high pressure power steering and that is another issue I have been having trouble tracking down.

High pressure power steering? Since when does power steering have a sensor to it, in a Jeep? I swear, I bought my Jeep because it was stripped of all that mechanical mahambajamba. My reservoir has no sensors to it.
I got an aquaintance in England who moved from the states and he rides a motorcycle there.

i believe there is a sensor in the line

I looked in my manual and there is no code 65 in the dtc's for generic tool p code. it goes p0030, p0036 then to p0106 and on from then.
Other than that, there is a power steering system analyzer tool to check pressure. Low pressure should cause hard streering or momentary increase in effort to steer, or the wheel will stick and bind. Thats what my fac. manwell says.
I used to put the front end on ramps and burp the system by turning the wheel to a fro, I think. with the cap off, maybe.

Tall Boy,

I believe there are more sensors on a TJ then a modern airplane.  If you wanted less sensors you should have bought a CJ.  Just kidding.  As for the code 65 in my FSM it is on page 25-6 and can be either a 73 (hex code) , 65 (Mil code) , or a P0551 (Generic Scan Tool Code)

I got a P0551 on  25-8 and it says the light comes on at high speed. Mine is a 2001 fsm though. Brief description= high pressure seen at high speed for 0551: Scan Display= Power Steering switch failure.

On my 25-6 it starts with P0301(m). i have no cross reference handy for any other scan tool, iy just has listed for generic scan tool p-code.

While checking a fuel pump problem, I discovered a blocked fuel return line (probably gummed up fuel as the car sat for a couple months). Blew compressed air into the return line to unclog it. Am now getting 30 miles more from the usual 3/4 tank fillup.

Suspect clogged line = excessive pressure = running rich.

You can tell if your return line is clogged if the line pressure doesn't drop after a minute of shutting off the engine. Used a pressure gauge plugged into the EFI fuel rail.

Hope this helps

6099 thanks for the tip on the fuel pressue issue will have to check that one.

Tall Boy no problem I was not trying to cause friction.  I believed they must have changed the chart in the FSM as my listed three different code references.

I did not take it personally cromwell, I actually got a chuckle from it. But I got scared of fuel pump issues awhile ago and founf that the in tank pumps need gas to coll it down, so I always run it with a good amount of gas in it to coll the pump. I also have been using gas additives like sea foam to keep it clean. I put  marvel mystery oil in the tank a couple of weeks ago too. I really do not want to rip out the tank for a pump issue so I keep up preventative maintenance and have been doing it since I got it.

Its all good.  Now that I changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor.  I am getting not only the code 65 but also a code 51 (fuel system lean) what else should I be looking at.  The reason I am asking is now that I am living in Ireland I can not just run down to an autozone or NAPA as they do not exist.  So any insight you all have will be great.

champion plugs are crap in jeep engines. i use bosch platnum plus 4's and great power all around with my 4 banger, although i have added a few power adding items to the engine also. i usually get between 16-18 m.p.g and thats with my foot in the throttle constantly on a 20 gallon tank. if you want to improve fuel economy a full tune up is in order, i.e fuel filter, plugs wires, cap and rotor, air filter. plus change your oil and run a full synthetic. syn.fluid in your diffs and snycromesh trans fluid in the trans will also help,as the engine wont have to work as hard make parts move. puttin more horsepower and torque to ground.

Tall Boy were do you get the sea foam and marvel mystery oil.  They do not sell it here in Ireland so I will have to see if I can get it shipped to me.

Just do a search online for it, or get whatever they have there to add to gas and/or oil. The U.K is the mother land Cromwell.

The UK may be the mother land but at a 2 to 1 exchange rate it sucks.....
