I want to run 35s on my 97 with a 4cyl and the 3-spd auto. I would like to ask who would run 4:56s and why? and who would run 4.88s and why? I'm leaning toward the 4.88s

I would run 4.88 cuz i have a 95 4cyl 3-speed auto and the 4.10 gears suck with 33s. With these underpowered motors, Gearing is your friend.

For 35's I'd go with no less then 4.88's bit I think 5.13's would be better, even if it's an auto. I run 4.56's with 35 with a manual and even staying in 4th is a bit too high. Going to 4.88's would give me around 400 more rpm's so there isn't that much difference between them. Still, if you're sticking with stock axles (hopefully you aren't), 4.88's as low as you can go.
This is also in the FAQ. You might want to play around with this applet to see what your RPM's will be for each gear: http://www.jeeptech.com/javaAps/gta.html

hey guys im new here, but im wondering the same thing. the 4.88s a good choice for my 4 banger with 35 and a manual.

I run 35s on a 5-speed (bias ply and steel rims = heavy) and 4.56 gears. I wish I had 4.88s. An auto is somewhat more forgiving, but I find myself downshifting to 3rd on long grades and even on flat ground if it's windy.
4.88 is def. the way to go.

Well...the ONLY reason you might want to go to 4.56's is if you plan on dropping in a 400hp engine in the near future and don't want to spin the tires every time you pull away.
Even though I'm adding D60's to my rig this Spring I am staying with 4.88's instead of going lower...even though I could.
Just don't want to change out the gears later (hopefully next year) when I swap out for a V8.
