Anyone have some pics or ideas how to put together some custom Flat Tube fenders on my YJ without spending $100's on prefab stuff? It's almost time to cut out some rust and I figure I can buy new fenders or weld together something better than original.... PoisonSpyderCustoms are really nice but even with them you still need the original inner fenders. I have time and a MIG but very little available play money as I have a new JeepKid on the way!

Blue Torch has a DIY kit...was just reading a write up on it this morning in 4WD magazine??

I took a look here's the page link to the YJ model http://www.bluetorchfab.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=133_74&products_id=551. This about half the cost of Spyder Customs http://www.spydercustoms.com/tjparts/tubefenders/index.php! I was thinking just exactly along these lines but with the flare option to keep the tires covered for DOT purposes. Doesn't look too complicated though...... perhaps I can fab up something like this. Thanks for a fast reply Mozman68!
Found anothersite

I can see each piece I need to fab! Here's a shot using the factory flares.....hmmmm

Well, I kinda like REV111's. These are one of the few out there that has an inner fender. http://www.rev111.com/

That is about the most bada** fender I have ever seen...... though it's a bit much for the 31's I run! Hmmm... just how big could you go with out even a lift? Thanx for the link Jeffy!
Let's see if I start the heater in the garage now..... park the wifes car out in the cold....in about 3 months I can get the metal warm enough to MIG properly!
-
I don't really like the whole 'Metal Cloak' thing. The front fenders with the bump for the tire really look weird. I'd rather have the whole fender up higher, which is why I like the AEV highfenders.
Their regular fenders are noce though. I like the rivets. It makes replacing a panel a simple job.

i love my BTF tube fenders. i made inner fenders out of old washing machines i got for free. came out great and cost a total of $175.

hard to see black tube fenders with such bad lighting... but you get the idea....
-
nice jeep.. but it looks like its missing and axle or 2...
-
go tube fenders the look oh so sexy :D
-
well I have started to sketch out some ideas..... first, my inner fenders are in suprisingly good shape considering I'm in the rust belt. so my ideas mostly will incorporate them. I am leaning towards using atleast some diamond plate to fill between tubing. (http://www.metalfusionfab.com/images/products/Tube_Fenders/BK-YJ-EX-1.JPG)
but I can't decide what to do about the flares, nothing I am seeing is quite right for my taste. I really want 3-4" flares that still cover all the way to the bottom of the fender to keep most of the road debris off of the sides of the jeep and well.....me mostly. :) kinda looking for the old Willy's look maybe.... either way I'm sure I can buy the steel alot cheaper than $175. Might mysteriously have to stop at the metal fab shop for a project at work, atleast show the guys there some ideas.

ok anyone else notice the block of wood under the front grill piece on the blue yj above of is it just me????????
-
looks to me like the grill is lifted( like a body lift?) and you can see the radiator which just happens to be yellowish.. my 2 cents of sight
-
I been squinting at it for a few minutes ...... all i see is the bottom of the radiator and a body lift bushing of some sort :?
-
Yeah, it's got a 1" body lift. As everyone's already pointed out, you're looking at the radiator.
There was a Jeep owned by a guy on the Jeep-L that had really cool fenders. They were made to look like classic flatfenders and not hacked up stock fenders. I don't remember who's it was though. There was also a pict in a Jim Allen book that had a YJ with classic flatfenders on it too.

nice jeep.. but it looks like its missing and axle or 2...
look a littlecloser before you try to call out anything in my pictures. if you look harder you will see there are axles both front and rear. what there ISN'T is knuckles, spindles, brakes, etc on the hp44.... I was finishing up my axle swap when i made the fenders and took those pictures. i didn't realize i had to take fresh current pictures of the entire jeep when all he needed was pictures of tube fenders. my bad. maybe i will go snap some new ones tomorrow so that won't be a problem

I like the layout of the flare in REVs fender. I don't like the OD width of the tubing to do it. Making it a little smaller would have made a better impression for the design.
I think the tubing used to make flat fenders has too big OD. Figure this, you can't use them as a skid tube of sorts like you could do with bumpers and kick panels (nerf bars or rock bars). Its because the fender is still secured to the radiator sheetmetal and that is only secured with one bolt. When rubbing on the front tip of the flat fender, you affective are pushing against the radiator sheetmetal and across to the other side fender. I know the fenders are bolt to the body at the bulkhead and this provides stability but the farther you are away from that point, the bigger the bending arm.
Has anyone seen this?

Its a play on the flatfender CJ of the past. The true flat fender CJs have a less wide hood in comparison to the tub. The tub wedges outward right in front of the door. The squareness of the fenders covered the tires as well as acted as a mud flap. They enclosed a straight side look for the wedge area of the tub. This guy uses the square design with sheetmetal. Nice work, but I didn't quite like the 'fat' bottom of the flare. A little wedge there would bring it all together and act as a mud flap.
I see REVs as an opposite to this design. They are slightly wider than the tub and come back to the tub. The hump draws the attention to provide space for tire at full compression. They just need to make the tubing OD smaller.

my tube fenders have scaraped on rocks and trees without any bending.....
-
They are a little to wide for my taste and I don't quite like the bottom part.
But overall it looks a lot like the original GPW jeep. A bit smaller and they would be awesome

Well to my absolute dis-belief ,even with some rust through the fenders and a spot under the passenger door sill, I got a new inspection sticker on the Jeep today! But not without first setting my 4 squirrels on fire! No joke! I pulled into work this morning and smelled burning oil..... opened the hood and oil was everywhere on the passenger side engine compartment. So I bring it to my friends at the local shop to get out of the cold and see what's up. Well we couldn't see anything so they sprayed some Brakecleen or something all over it to rinse off the oil. I said "OK I'm gonna fire it up". To everyones suprise it literally fired up into flames when a spark from the starter solenoid lit the cleaner!!!! After a brief moment of awe..... we quick hosed it back off with the water hose(again not a good thing really had there been a gas fire as well) that was right there for rinsing the snow/ice off vehicles. After alot of laughter we saw no damage to anything and figured out the Crankcase vent had frozen shut and spinning the engine at 3g's on the way to work blew oil out the dipstick tube!
So after the free engine "degreasing" I asked the guys what I needed to pass inspection and they said "It'll pass!" :D So I atleast have more time to repair the fenders correctly! As for the flat fenders/flare...... Maybe a slight taper towards the body at the bottom and a transition to the rocker guards? maybe even make a step out of it? I agree about the tubing being too large i'm thinking 1" OD. More sketching to do.... BTW They did tell me that the tube fenders were legal in Maine "as long as they cover the tires" Which they make a really big deal out of ..... even pull people over for tires more than 1/2" past the flare!
-
Wow that YJ looks like it's going to fly away. Those fenders are huge! I think the tacky TJ Bushmaster flares look better on there.
-
well here's a few "doodles" i put on paper today.....(http://home.maine.rr.com/rwing1/fendersketch1.jpg)
don't know how bad the image will look on here.......

resolution sucks on this one..... but I kinda like the fender with smooth curves at the bottom
