Title: average speed.
Post by: WillyGrubbs on February 10, 2007, 08:05:02 PM
:puzzled:I wanted to take a kind of a census to see what the top speed is for some of the other jeep owners with the 4 bangers out there.  So if you would post how fast your wrangler can ride comfortably and what the top speed is it will help me get an idea of an average. I’m sure some of you have seen another post of mine wondering why my yj is so slow. I am trying to get an idea of what I should expect out of mine comparatively and then I will work on getting it where it needs to be.

Thanks everyone

Willy

Official top speed is something like 98MPH I believe.  It would be scary to drive a lifted Jeep that fast though.

The problem you have with top speed is that it changes with gearing and tire combination.  Not to mention aerodynamics.  Still your jeep should be able to do 75mph fairly easily on a flat road.

55mph at 4000Rpm's is a lot in 4th.  I'm really wondering about the accuracy of the speedo and/or the gearing of that Jeep.  Can you crawl under it and look at the differential cover and read the ID tag on there.  It should be a metal tag at the 100'clock position.  There should be some three groups of letters and numbers.  What I'm looking for is teh middle set.  It should read something like 307, 354, 373, 410 or 411.

The front or rear differential? I am out of state now. When I get back home I will look for the number.

Thanks.

It shouldn't matter, they are the same, except for 410/411.  Generally, an auto will have 373 while a manual will have 410 (Actual gears are 411 in the rear and 410 up front).  Now during times of low stock, Jeep has been known to mix and match ratios.  I've heard of a '95 having 354 instead of 373 and a manual could easily have 373 instead of 410/411.

Couldn't tell ya my top speed, doesn't feel very safe above 70 so I don't take it any higher than that. With a headwind I struggle to keep 65 though. Flat ground with a tailwind I'm sure I could easily crack 80 but I wouldn't try it.

I'm running the stock gears on 31" tires with a OME lift, and 70 seems to about all she'll do comfortably.
With all the hills around here (San Diego) I find myself doing the 5-4-5 shift often. Next up will be a taller gear set. Hopefully, that'll help.

'Bout the only way I'd see anything higher than 75 is push it off a cliff.
A big cliff.

I mean REALLY big.  8)

55 is the most comfortable.

I've been changing the tire pressures to see what works best with my setup.  I found that at 35psi I can run a little faster.  Drove to work the other day and was able to cruise at 65.  Started tire pressure at 45, then went to 40, 38,  and now 35.  May go down to 32psi and see how that works out.

I haven't been able to go over 70 downhill.  Doesn't feel safe going that fast.

My bomb will routinely do 65-70 whether it's up/down hills on the way to work.  It does slow a bit in a heavy wind though.  Seems like being basically a brick on wheels, wind slows me down more than gravity!

before i did my 2 inch lift and 31's the fastest i went was 70 because my brother was with me and started getting scared when the jeep started bouncing up and down when went over 70... since i got my lift i haven't gone over 55 because i haven't gone on a freeway since i did the lift... but if i have hills and or a head wind   i can be stuck around 45 ( my motor isn't running as strong as it could)

before my lift with the stock 28" wheels I topped her out at 93 with the pedal to the metal in fifth going down a big hill with my car packed full of luggage and crap.

Now with the lift and bigger tires tops out at about 70 but I think that the speedo is off by about 10% so like 77 i think

I never pay much attention to how fast im going, just go with the flow of traffic...the jeep tells you when it doesnt want to go any faster but you have to remember its a jeep not a sports car :thumb:

I was on a straight road for a few miles and got her up to 90.
That was with stock suspension and 30s

I have gotten two speeding tickets in the last 5 months though for doing 73ish in a 55  :brick:
I don't find it very hard to get to 75 (sometimes I don't notice I'm going that fast if there is no traffic around) ...but above that I have to work it a bit more and it becomes a lot more noticeable that I'm going fast.

Now that I have a 2" BB installed and 32s on the way... that will probably change though.  :uhoh:

Mine cruises comfortably at 80-85 the thing just purrs at that speed. No lift yet though. If it still handles like this after lifting it I will be a happy camper. As far as differential gearing if no tags are there or readable its simple. make a mark on the tire and the body with some sort of marker or crayon do the same on the pinion yoke and the diff housing then turn the wheel one turn and counting the number of turns of the driveshaft/pinion yoke is pretty accurate and simple.

I've gotten it up to 80 but felt the wind was going to rip it apart.  If I had enough road it could have gone a bit faster but I don't know that it would be in my best interest.  I easily cruses in the 60-70 range, flat road slight hills wont see over 50 on some northwest grades.  When I got it a year ago 60 would have meant a celebration.
