Title: JP Magazine SRT-6 Wrangler
Post by: Jeffy on February 18, 2007, 05:07:39 PM
I think it was Chris who first brought this up in another thread as a wish.  According to JP, they might make one.  Although this is an April issue.  I hope it is a joke.  Not to mention they have a picture of it 'Drifting'.  ::) I have not seen any other sources mentioning it.  :ghey:

The April issue of the JP magazine will have an image with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SRT-6 that will debut in 2008.

The Unlimited SRT-6 will be powered by a supercharged version of the 4.0L V-6 from the Doge NitroR/T that will make 415HP and 410 lb-ft of torque with 7.5 psi of boost. Will have a front Dana 44 and a hybrid Dana 60 rear (rumored to be a Dynatrac/DC development) and will be lowered to make it more racy for the (...)

This SRT-6 thing is interesting, but it wasn't quite what I had in mind.

I was thinking a "SRT-8" Wrangler Rubicon (kind of DCs version of the AEV Hemi Rubicon conversion) that swapped in the 6.1 Hemi and a beefed up drivetrain while keeping stock ride-height, selectable lockers, 4:1, etc.  Only, it just sounded like it would be for too limited a market and not worth the investment for DC.  Figured "SRT" (kind of like Toyota's "TRD" for their rear-locker pickups), because regardless of what the abreviation stands for, who in their right mind would mess with the Wrangler's off-road-ability (SRT "Performance" nomenclature or no)?

I guess the supercharged V6 is less expensive for them than the 6.1 Hemi.  But, what are they going to have to do to the drivetrain on the JK to get it to accomodate a 400hp(?) Supercharged V6? (Edit: oh, bigger axles to start)  Doing the big engine on the SRT-8 Grand Cherokee saw DC lower it, leave it with some kind of AWD system and kill its off-road use. DC's going to do this to the JK Wrangler? :crap:

(But, hey, who in the market uses their Jeep off-road anyway  ?  DC: "Jeep is a profit-center...we gotta do something to capitalize on the brand futher!"  Yah, Dieter )

If they chose to build this over the gladiator, dc has got a screw loose. You would figure that the Gladiator would have a better shot at marketing than the SRT-6... as far as Jeep buyers are concerned.

Take that picture and imagine it without the roof and the 4 drs on it. Having a hi-perf 'full' conv't with a little flare would probably be a real good seller, especially a 2wd version.

Now take all that, and go sign up with the 'Fast and Furious' contest. You'll win by just having 4 people sitting in the vehicle, breathing the rubber smoke!!!

So is this SRT-6 a JP magazine April Fools Joke as I've heard mentioned?

Or is this SRT-6 thing some kind of Performance version of the 2WD JK?

DC had to go AWD with the SRT-8 Grand Cherokee.  Probably going to be no "AWD" with the JK, so I am guessing 2WD if the thing is going to be lowered!  :yikes:

If it's going to be drifting like in the picture then it will be RWD.

I do get this feeling that the 2WD "Street" Wrangler is here to stay and might comprise a growing percentage of DC's Wrangler sales in the coming years.

Yup.  Alot of my friends ask me what i think of the new wranglers (thank god they havent seen that one) and when i tell them that i really don't like the idea of a watered down 2wd four door resembles an automotive icon minivan engine toting sell out piece of sheetmetal they tell me to take a breath before i pass out.  Most of the time i do.

I know you have your MTV crowd that's going to pose with the 2WD JKs wearing the big rims  ::).  But, in the scheme of things (and now that I've thought about it), I think the 2wd "Street" Wrangler is actually one of several legitimate evolution of the Willys Jeep, like it or not, in the 21st century (I have some long, drawn-out reasons to believe this).  It's just that nobody here, including me, is probably going to be buying one

like it or not two wheel drive jeeps are not new. its a rehash of an old idea that cuts down on prodution cost to make it more avalibie to the masses. how many times in the summer do you see a young girl driving a jeep with the top down cause its a convertable?

my 68 dj was 2 wheel drive when i got it and thats been fixed because thats what i wanted to do, but a lot of people are going to buy jeeps that rare two wheel drive cause thats what they want. and if its a wrangler base i hope they just bolt up a front end with out a major change to the frame so later on we can buy the weekend jeep from people who have out grown them and be able to put a real axle back in with minamal work and cost.

and besides if they are building it with a 60 axle like the mag says the idiots who think thier in the fast and furious and wreck well be able to pick up the axles cheap! :beers:

Its 3/23/07.  We ever establish whether this SRT-6 JK Wrangler is for real?  If it's JPs April Fools, they should have come up with something a little more "out there."  This concept seems too plausible, especially given the advent of the 2WD JK

Well, D.C needs to reclaim the market before Asia buys the U.S. Most everything I buy comes from the U.S, and btw I do not watch alot of T.V.

Local shop decided to make an SRT-8 JK.  These are the guys who have been swapping Hemi's and Viper motors into TJ's for a few years.

That was talked about back in October.  Not quite a SRT-8 though.

That's a different one, their first JK.  The one they are building to mimic an SRT8 is the Green one that got started in Dec.

Whoops, that is a new project.  Although 20" wheels aren't my cup of tea.

Is it just me or do the 4 door JK's look kind of like the Hummer H3's from a distance?

I defnitely agree with you.  I have mistaken hummers for the 4 door jks and the other way around several times when i wasn't wearing glasses.

Even though they may kinda sorta look similar I can tell the difference between the two on the road.

the four doors do look like the h3, oh but wait, the h4 is meant to compete with the jeep! last i saw the h4 was to be ready for 09 or 2010.

with the fj coming back out and now the h4 it makes me wonder why all the 4x4 parks are closing still. oh yeah thats right people are buying them to look cool, not to use. :crap:
