About a month ago I found my 4wd system to have a constant gear grinding bad enough to hurt my teeth. A few weeks later that problem wasn't as bad, but tonight it was just as bad if not worse. My entire drivetrain is stock in an '03 TJ SE. Stock D30/D35 axles. Could this problem be in my transfer case or a problem in the front axle when tryin to lock the hubs in? I couldn't tell exactly where the grinding came from, but it was loud. Please help ASAP!

Well, there are no hubs to lock on a TJ. When you say it's grinding, do you mean when you shift it into 4Lo or when it's actually moving in 4wd? If it's when you shift, 4Lo is not synchronized and you have to be doing under 5mph to get it to shift. Better yet, stop, shift then go. Since the front axle is always locked, I don't think it's an issue with it. If anything it would be the transfer case. Parts would have to be broken if it's grinding while driving. Although, 4wd probably wouldn't work either.

To add a little more, I always place tranny in nuetral to shift into 4wd low at a stop. Since both dshafts are not spinning, this sets the tcase before any input from the trans. At under 5mph, just shows the gap between the teeth of the gears in the tcase to mesh.
Since the dshafts are tied to tire speed, you can't really shift into 4wd high when spinning the rear tires. You have to be 'cruising' to get into 4wd high on the fly.
Another thing, I tried to go to 4wd low to 4wd high but couldn't with a lot of grinding. So I just went to 2wd hi, then started to move and pulled to 4wd high.

The grinding only happens when I'm tryin to move in 4wd. I have no problems shifting the transfer case and I'm always at a dead stop before shifting, but last night it was a lot harder to shift than usual, but it only grinds when I'm tryin to move.

Did you make sure there is ATF in the transfer case? I'm wondering if it's dry and the chain has stretched.

Could be that the chain has snapped. Makes a racket when that happens, and usually only in 4wd. SHould be able to take out the fill plug and feel if the chain is still there.
