Title: AX5 quick question.

Are all AX5,s created equal? I found a good deal on a replacment AX5, i have an 88 and the replacement AX5 is out of a 92. Thanks in advance to all.

Yes.  Bell housings did change but the transmission it self didn't.

Yup all the same, except the bell housing depending on internal or external slave. i put a rebuilt 93 into my 95.

Actually the newer AX5's have been improved a bit internally, when I blew 3rd gear in my 98
I found a used AX5 out of a older YJ and some of the bearings would not swap over. Turned
out they had beefed up the bearing on the cluster gear slightly in newer models with a wider bearing
so if your swapping parts have a micrometer handy. So newer is better as long as it's not worn out!

...if you're swapping internal parts.  It sounds like he's wanting to swap the whole thing though.  Good to know that they upgraded something though.

If you don't listen to anything else I post on this site, listen to this: Do the AX5-AX15 conversion. You will thank me. I did mine 3 years ago with a tranny with over 180k on it out of a cherokee and never had a problem since. The conversion cost me $880 with a use tranny. Much cheaper than a rebuild with a warrantee. I didn't want to pull this thing back out and I haven't since. The AX5 is crap, ALL of them are.

Another quickie, At the risk of sounding COMPLETELY IGNORANT, what is the difference between internal and external slave, and how do I tell what I got? As you may have guessed I'm not a mechanic YET, but I do have a Jeep si it's just a matter of TIME. :brick: :wall:

slave cylinder sits on the outside of the bell housing if it is external. It'll be a plastic thing that is about the size of a smaller hot sauce bottle colored black I think. it sits on the driver side of the bell housing/transmission near the junction of the motor/tranny.

if you have an 88 you probably have internal slave cylinder like my 1990 yj has. if you have external it will push on the fork that goes into the bell housing to push the pilot bushing to engage the clutch ( :puzzled: im close but not perfect on words) if you have internal slave cylinder you should see 2 hoses going into the passenger side of the bell housing.

mine's on the drivers side protruding from a impregnated hump on the bell housing where the end of the fork is . and it does have plastic lines going to it.v Mine's external though.

There are three different slave setups on YJ's.  The early internal has the inpet line on the driver side and the bleeder line on the passenger side.  You can't see the actual slave.

The 1993 was the only year for the revised internal slave where I believe both the inlet and bleeder are on the driver side.

Then there is the +1994 with the external slave.  Everything is on the driver side and the slave is out in the open with no bleeder.

The external slave is usually considered to be most desirable.  But, I'm just wondering, any reports of it getting banged up off road?
