I have had transmision (auto) leak for a while and fixed it once by retorching the bolts but its keep coming back. I know that these are notorius for leaking. Should I use a rubber gasket, RTV or a crappy cork gasket, it currently has a cork gasket and has been leaking since I got the tranny rebuilt? The filter came with a rubber gasket and I am considering using that, anyone have any experience with this?

I always use Permatex Ultra Black. Seems to make up for the inconsistancies in the pan better that a gasket. Tranny pan bolts don't take much torque, so if you have re-tightened them you may have also deformed the pan flange. Make sure to put it on a flat surface to check it and pound the flange flat if neccessary.

Yeah, I think it is like 10 foot lbs, but I know that the cork gasket is not worth a :crap: and retorqueing was just a quick fix but I was carefull to not over torcque. How much difference is there between the ultra black and the ultra blue, I have lots of the ultra blue that I use for diff gaskets and it says that it is ok for transmission pans?

Blue should be fine, I had to look it up to even see what the difference is. Looks like the black is more oil resistant but either should work.

The black works really well. My bike was leaking a good amount even with a new rubber gasked so i put the permatex in and it stopped it immediately and hasn't leaked since. Going on 2 years.

I have changed out my auto transmission gasket but was wondering if the TJ has a transmission cooler that I need to flush? I know that there are lines running to the radiator but not sure if it has transmission fluid in in it?

jcsanders79,
Your cooler lines do flow through the radiator for cooling.
I have a leak in my 97 auto trans. I kept thinking it was the gasket or the lines after I had them flushed. The weird thing is though it leaks when I let it sit for a day or two. Well after exhaustive searching I found the problem. The seal on the shifter is leaking. After talking with a couple of trans experts the consensus is that once the trans fluid has a chance to cool and go back into the pan it puts pressure on the worn out seal and pushes through. You have to drop the pan to replace it. I am hoping to get another flush and have it fixed in the the summer. :brick:
