With gas prices going up with no sight of them falling anytime soon; do you drive your Jeep everyday?
-
Can't afford any other option. but 15+ mpg on average isn't to bad, yet. but then again I expect Hurricane Katrina to be responsible for a $0.10+ rise in prices at the pump. I'm still doing 1 tank per week. But I did park the wife's suburban when it hit $50 every week and didn't fill the tank. We're not to far from that right now.
Great, if I did jump on the econobox bandwagon the neighbors would bitch about the suburban and 2 jeeps sitting in my drive way. I think the government will have to step in here soon. When we hit $3.00 in San Antonio that will be close to doubling the price of fuel in less than 3 years. Venzuela is still $0.12 a gallon. It will have a hugely negative effect on the economy, imho.
BTW if the economy is doing so well, how come I didn't get a raise so I could afford to spend more on gas and everything else?

I drive the Jeep once a week. I now finally have someone to go off-roading with again so I take it out every weekend, before that it just sat in the garage and I had to turn it on every week to the oil wouldn't settle. For a DD, I use a 95 Nissan truck, which does 24mpg, but that's only twice a week when I go to school. Other days I either stay home or catch a ride with one of my friends. During the small break I had between the summer semester and now the fall semester I probably only drove twice. All my friends have compacts, so they don't really care that I don't drive and need to catch a ride.
-
Fortunately, I have a work truck that I am allowed to drive 24/7, no questions asked, and the best part, gas is paid by them. My XJ sits awaiting many project completions and is driven very rarely at this time.
-
I drive the TJ everychance I get, gas mileage is @25 mpg and it holds speed on the highway. My only drawback is the A/C, only works part-time and that is a killer here in Phoenix where temps are @113 on the drive home.
-
I drive my Jeep every day. We do opt to take the Audi now though when we can because it gets about 24/30.
-
Yep, my Jeep is my daily driver. At close to 20 m.p.g., it's my "high-efficiency" vehicle.
Of course, I just cut my driven miles per year significantly by moving back to the Tidewater area. I'm now 4 miles from work instead of 17. Between the reduced insurance premiums and the fuel savings, I figure I'm going to save at least $1,000 per year. Pretty cool... 8)

My Jeep is the only tagged vehicle I own and I drive it every day. I'm seriously thinking about getting a moped to get back and forth to work now. With gas prices going the way they are it should pay for it's self before the year is over. (http://www.delawareja.com/modules/Forums/images/smiles/crazy.gif)

Yuppers, I drive it 70+ miles a day, round trip to and from work. Getting in the average of 23 mpg range now, with occasional gusts to 25!! It's a bear in the heat of summer with no air, but I take out all the windows and the doors, then leave just the top on like an oversized bikini top to give me some shade from the Kansas sun. It get's pretty stifling sitting at traffic lights with the sun beating down on me and no wind, or with a 20 mph blast furnace wind off the pavement. Sunshine isn't working now, and I could be driving her Camry.....but I'd rather drive the YJ and pay a little more each week in gas just for the love of the Jeep!! 8)
-
You forgot to add the option of driving your other Jeep to work everyday....
-
I not only drive it every day, but I often drive long distances. I put 80,000 on my 95 YJ in the last 3 years and I didn't drive at all all this summer due to an aviation accident. Mild wheeling and lots of highway, but wouldn't drive anything else. If I had the time and money for another vehicle, it would be a Jeep or maybe a Jeep!
-
My TJ is my daily driver, and luckily I only work a couple of miles from my house, so fuel efficiency isn't really an issue for me. The only downside is since it's my daily driver I'm hesitant to take it out and wheel it really hard on the weekends. I'll probably get a new Jeep in a couple of years, and set my current TJ aside as a toy.
-
I voted...
One of my great selling points of my Jeep, was that it was my daily driver. Then I picked up a lil' sporty Nissan, and I've been racing that to and from work. I see my Jeep every morning and every night, and I miss driving it dearly. But as most of you mentioned, with gas rising, crappy gas mileage and just the ability to let it park (not add any more wear and tear than necessary), I kinda like the parked Jeep.
I have dreams of disassembling parts, spending weeks to put it back together, and not have to worry about it. I dream of taking it wheeling (which I haven't had a chance to do in quite some time), thrashing on it, and not have to worry about it being my only form of transportation.
I could still consider my Jeep a daily driver. I'm just lucky that I don't have to drive it everyday, only when I want to.

Since I work and live on base (military) I either drive my Jeep, or ride my mountain bike (weather depending). I'll sometimes drive it cross-country if I am going to a school. Cracked exaust manifold, rusted out exaust system (cat's probably clogged too), and 33x13.50s and I'm still getting 15-18 mpg and hitting 75 mph (on my GPS).
-
I am fortunate to have a company truck here at the house. That lets the YJ full for the weekends.

So it's an older post... I remember it from when I first started..
But its timely again... Here's a bump to the top for all you new guys!
-
Freedom machine is my only vehicle. Taking it on a solid roadtrip in three weeks (Boulder Co, to Northern Minnesota) I hope i can get around 20 mpg, I just got a TBS in the mail and my 4.0 TB is on the way hopefully those help the mph a little. Going 65 through Nebraska is no way travel.
-
I was financing my Audi for $550 a month and decided I had enough....paid $8200 cash for my 2000 TJ and now I've been spending $1,000 a month since I owned it!!
Seriously...that was just to get the basics (soft tops, new wheels, stereo, center console, etc.) and now I'm not looking to spend any more until I decide to drop $700-1000 on the 3" lift (and then another $1000 next year to jump up to 33's).
Only commute about 12 miles a day total and TRY and ride my bike to work when I feel like it.....so MPG is not an issue...and the 15-16 I'm getting right now around town isn't much worst than the 18-19 I was getting with the Audi.
-
how are people getting 23+ mpg in the jeep. I get about 19mpg city and it gets worse when i get on the highway lol. It is my daily driver, I drive about 250 miles a week.
-
Stock Jeeps or with mild mods.
I think if I kept my Jeep under 65mph, I'd get back into the 20's. Only problem is everyone else wants to go 70-80mph so it can be a bit dangerous.
In the city it does alright except for all of the stop and go.
-
I would like to know the same thing I also get around 16, 17 mpg and see that lowered while driving on the highway. Jeffy if probably right that i would see 20 mpg if i drove 60 instead of 70
-
^ make sure all your maintnance items are up to date. I was getting around 16-17 when i bought my jeep, then I changed out my fuel filter/cap/rotor/plugs/o2 sensor/eletric fan and i'm getting about 19mpg now. This is all city though.
-
I drive my TJ everyday. I have the 4 banger and 31X10.50 BFG AT's, and I average around 18 mpg myself. I too would like to know how to break the 20 mpg threshold. I have heard that opening up the air a little, and possibly adding the 4.0 throttle body will increase this. Anyone else done this and gotten good results with MPG?
-
^ i'm wondering the same thing. I already bought a spacer and am looking for a 4.0 throttle body... I'm hoping i can gain alittle bit out of it. I'm betting my broken exaust manifold stud isn't helping out my mpg to much either, but i dont plan to fix that till I either build a header or buy one hehe.
-
yea I have a 4.0 TB being shipped to me from New Jersey right now, and a TB spacer sitting on my desk waiting to get installed i'll let you know if they help when i install. Hopefully the 4.0 TB works alright its form a 96 i think and mine is a 99.
-
Well all I own are Jeeps and i pretty much want it that way. My 2.5 mj is parked waiting for so refreshing and the YJ is apart getting a new motor and other mods and goodies so I'm driving a 96 XJ i just got for $1000 and with 211k on the 4.0 5 speed it runs strong and get 22mpg so i'm happy but can't wiat to go toples in the yj
-
well i would drive it everyday but... i still go to school and my bro drives me anyway.. and my dad wants me to start driving with our s10 first cuz it has longer wheel base and is harder to roll.... but next year it will be ounce again a dayly driver 8)
-
8MPG and i drive it every day to school, work, the beach, the bar, wendy's, and advance auto parts :)

8MPG and you can still afford a Frosty??
-
i gave up smoking so i could afford frosty's
only kiddie size though
i figured out my fuel economy when i was running my 2 piece best top hard top and had all my tools and crap in the back so i'm sure it's a little better now that summer is here and i have no top or doors.... unless aerodynamics would kill my mpg that bad....

I'm getting a Kawasaki KLR650 to share the daily driving load with the jeep though...
-
I have a 97 Astro conversion van, 86 Toy on 32's, 84 olds Toronado (The ghetto cruiser), 94 Dodge Shadow 3.0 and my YJ. I still drive the Jeep everyday. Nothing in my lot is more fun, screw gas mileage.
