My brother in law is borrowing my 96 cherokee. He told me this weekend that after an hour or two of driving at highway speeds the engine will stumble and cut out but return to normal after a couple of minutes. I have replaced the fuel filters (both) and the fuel pump and thought I fixed the problem. I don't think it is the injectors because it does not do it all the time. Could it be one of the sensors? I don't know if the TPS or O2 sensor could cause something like that. Any ideas?

Sounds more like an electrical problem like the crank sensor on a 4.0l engine

same thing thats happening to my wrangler still havent solved it, all the parts coil to plugs is not an issue, neither is fuel pressure regulator. gonna do cps soon when i save up the money, if you figure it out let me know

on the cps sensor you can try heating it or cooling it. I remeber quite some time ago we played with a 4.0 that would die randomly when it died it would not run untill it cooled down. so when we got it to die we put an ice pack against the sensor and it fired up within a minute. replaced the sensor and she was cured. just dont make it to hot, also wiggling the wires near ignition parts and tapping on them might locate the bad part. breaks in wires and poor connections will show when you wiggle the wiring harness near the suspect components.
