This isn't really a DIY but it's more of a "lessons learned report". I have a 1990 yj red. About a year ago I put some rattle can "bedliner" in. That was my first mistake. But I'll get to those later. I might as well start with some pics to keep you all interested.
Day 1 this is what I started with, a sponge scratchy thing and carb cleaner, and a whole lot of black stuff.
the spong thing didn't last long as you can see it was like 100 grit :finger:
So I upgraded and made a little more progress.
This was after day 2
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/jetcracker82/DSC00100.jpg)
I still had a long way to go.
This was the end of day 3. Now it was ready for the Herculiner
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/jetcracker82/DSC00098.jpg)
You get a gallon with the kit and that was more than enough to do 3 coats and then some.
coat # 1
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/jetcracker82/DSC00112.jpg)
After coat # 2 and 3
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/jetcracker82/DSC00111.jpg)
The rollbars were pretty scratched up so I thought you could use a coat.
The next day the front was still a little tacky but I put it on pretty thick in the high traffic areas.
Now on to the lessons learned. First don't ever put rattle can bedliner on anything. BIG MISTAKE. But if you do and decide to take it off. You'll need to know a few things first.
1. 40 grit sand paper is you good friend as well as carb cleaner.
2. Carb cleaner truns the spray on bedliner to goo, its kinda cool.
3. Herculiner says on the instructions to wear glovers. Go one further and wear glovers and long sleaves. That crap gets everywhere and is impossible to get off.
4. Get lots of acetone.
5. Roll bars are heavy for one person to manipulate, ask a buddy or the wife other wise you could scratch the crap out of it. No sense taking chances.
6. Stay away from 100 grit sand paper unless you are just wanting to smooth things out.
7. After you take everything out don't forget to save alittle bedlining to coat the bolt tops after you put everything back in or you'll just have to hit them with some spraypaint.
8. If the wife want to help let her. Even if she just kind scratches on stuff to a little while, that work you didn't have to do and will greatly save some abuse on your body.
9. Blue 3M type is the greatest type ever invented. I love that stuff.
10. If you're going to use a drill use one that you plug in the damn wall not a battery powered one. Unfortunatlly I wasn't able to use my cord drill because of the communist bastards the run my apatrment complex decided to install no outlet plugs outside. So I was going through batteries pretty quick.
11. Herculiner says to not use the rollers they give you more than once but you can just give them a good rinse with Acetone and your g2g.
12. Herculiner stinks liks a$$ if your sensitive to strong smells don't go near it but if your not a chick you should be ok.
13. Be prepaired to talk to everyone that walks by because you'll attract alot of attention with your jeep all torn apart. (Old women will probably tell you that you Jeep is "Cute" be prepaired)
14. A shop vac and a power washer would have been great. Instead I had to put a seat back in and drive down the street to the car wash. Unfortunatlly there's also a police station down the same street so the roll bars had to go back in and then out again and then back in and out so I could have a seat belt. :fitz:
15. When you first open Herculiner stur the crap out of it. The little rubber bits settle some I guess.
16. Above all take your time and try not to set a time hack for yourself because you won't make I promise.
In conclusion Herculiner looks great but only time will tell if it will hold up to the abuse of day to day wear. Take your time and be smart about what you put on your Jeep. Do the research and TRY not to make snap decisions about something with you rig. Good luck I hope this helped some of you and would love to see some of your pic of your bedliners. Cheers. ;)

wow looks nice. thanks for the advice.

Awesome write up! In 2 weeks I was going to start this in my Jeep, My wife is taking a week off and I am going to take her car to work that week, I have a bunch of things to do to my Jeep that week so it should be a good time.... Did you have to put 3 coats on, and did you re sand it every time?
-
good job man i have had my tub done for about 5 years now and it just takes the punishment. mine is still dark and i haven't seen any inperfections in it yet. you do want to go thick but it isn't necessary. two coats will do just fine. i have been using herc for years and never had any problems. you never have to worry about rust again. nice writeup man.

YJ What brand did you use?
I used Durbak One gallon and a paint brush and dabbed it on, the roller was a pain in the ass and the dab technique work out better. AS far a Low maintiance This was the Mod. I just plan Love it.

Well it turned out real nice. Oh I forgot I do get a little urethane squeak from under the passager seat riser. ANd i thought it was my shackle bushing for almost a Year.

I bolted my seats down while the liner was still alittle tacky so I shouldn't get much squeak but then again noises add character to jeeps. Besides with the doors off all I hear is freedom :naughty:

i use the tried and true, plus cheap, herc by the can

Great write-up. Does this stuff come in colors? I'd like to do the TJ but would lie to match the silver.
-
I think herculiner only comes in black, but gatorgrip comes in about 25 colors and is the same process. It also has a uv protectant you can add to keep it from fading out over time on the colors.
-
Sorry, I had a brain fart. It's called grizzlygrip! Where is the edit button?
-
hmm, I'm thinking about doing this also. Maybe I'll wait until August as I have the month off and can take my time.

I checked with Herculiners F.A.Q. section and.....
"Q: What colors are available?
A: Black, Gray Red & White."
Looks like I'll be getting the gray. All my carpet is out already and I don't keep the back seat in so it won't be a big job for me.

The non black herculiner is quite a bit different. I looked into it when I did my tub. The colored stuff doesn't have nearly as much texture to it.
-
watch the colors from fading to. my buddy did his red and it looks pink now after a couple of years. mines still nice and black
-
That's why the Grizzly Grip has the uv stuff to add. It keeps it from fading. Mind you, I am not speaking from experience, only what I have heard and read.

I really never considered doing any color but black. The contrast of the black with any color looks the best to me. It makes what you got pop, and with my 1990 paint I need all the help I can get.
-
i have my tub inside done plus a rocker strip around the outside and my tailgate and my front fenders, basically anything i saw getting scratched up repeatedly

I have two reasons for wanting to use a color. First, it's our daily driver and only gets trail use on the weekends so I want to keep it presentable while still having the protection of the liner. Second, I have no a/c so I don't want the black heating up my interior in the summer.

Well I did mine this week, turned out good, I wish I had a little more than a gallon, but over all its not to bad.
If I had to do it over again, I would take 1-2 afternoons pulling every thing out of the Jeep, 1afternoon to clean/tape the tub, 1 FULL day to be able to apply 2 light coats on, and the 3rd coat use what ever you have left. then one more afternoon putting every thing back together.... I let mine sit for 24 hours to fully dry... I felt it was better safe than sorry.
That would have been ideal for me and my family, and my Jeep. but I rushed it and it got a little sloppy some places and a little light on others, but over all I cant complain. My tip to any one doing it, take your time when your painting it on, it takes a lot longer than I had thought it would and I was up tell midnight doing it.... and had to get up at 4:30 am the next day for work... not a good idea.
here are some of my pics.

yup... it did...
But it still has 2 more years of payments on it, and my wife reminds me of that every time I go wheeling! :brick:
-
Herculiner also has the UV topcoat you can apply. I bought a qt of it (i think that was the size atleast). But i never applied it since i realized mine will be seeing daily work abuse and would end up being redone eventually anyways. It already is showing some scrapes/scuffs not to mention my black is now grey from all the concrete and concrete dust haha.
I spent 2 days on mine. The first day's morning was removing the interior/taping/sanding/washing etc... Then that night i applied the coats and then the next day i put all my interior back in. It looked great when i first did it, it is a million times better then carpet thats for sure.

Some awesome write ups. Giving me too many ideas.

I went through a very similar scenario. I saw Rustoleum's EZ liner for 40 bucks and passed over the Herculiner. I put the EZ liner-used the whole gallon-and right away i knew it wasnt going to be thick enough. I still did it as carefully as i could, took all seats out, scrubbed it down, cleaned etc. A few months later that thin garbage fake liner started chipping if anything scraped against it. finally the floorpans wore down and exposed bare steel. So i got some herculiner last week and relined it. I didnt take the front seats out though cause the EZ liner was intact under there. SO my jeep now has the EZ liner (guess it kind of acts as a primer now) and the Herculiner as well. Loved the result i got. Its thick and tough.

wow 3 year post resurrection! oh well prob something good to be brought back up before summer and all the tops come off and the world can see your tub, just thought of something while re-reading this, lowes sells a little paint mixing tool that goes into a drill for a buck. looks like a foot long rod with a little propeller at the end. makes the mixing way easier and consistent. i use it everytime
