This sucks. Alt died on the tow rig earlier this week so I had to find time to replace that in order to make a wheelin trip this weekend, and once I got finished with that I found this. My shock was bashed in right above the the eye, bent the rod, and locked it up. The mount then tore itself off, the thing is twisted where the mount tore like paper. So trip is canceled and this weekend will be cutting them off and cleaning up the tube as I wait for the UPS fairy. I'll be moving them to the front of the tube to keep them better out of harm's way.

I agree... that does suck. Any idea as to how it happened? Can't really tell from the photo but was the mount rotted?

Log got kicked up and dented the shock, locked it up and when the spring compressed it ripped it of. Wasn't rotted at all. On the bright side I had Rancho 5000's that I hated, so it's a good chance to upgrade.

Didn't CJs have the shock mount on the spring plate?
When you relocate the shock mount, don't forget to get the correct length shocks for the travel of your suspension.

yes they did.. well at least cj2a and cj3a's did.

That happened to me too, they're now flush with the bottom of the axle (SOA) and the extended bumpstops keep the shocks from compressing too much. The front shocks mount to the top of the axletube now to get enough droop.

If you plan to stay SUA you might want to consider u-bolt skid plates with shock mounts. This way, if you ever have to rotate the pinion, you won't have to worry about shock mount relocation.

I also have a set of these on order from M.O.R.E. so I didn't have to deal with shorter shocks. Right now they're about a half inch from bottoming out a full flex but I have 4 inches of down travel beyond full droop. Once these are in the travel should be right in the middle of the shock's range.

I thought about it but I'll wait for the 8.8 in spring before I decide.
Anyway I'm back on the road with a new set of Skyjacker Hydro's. They ride MUCH nicer than the Ranchos.

hmm i run old man emu long travel shock for a land cruser bj 40 and i must say in my opinion there the best shock made other than a remote res shock
