Title: Swapping 4.10 for 4.88
Post by: willierust on July 24, 2007, 10:56:28 AM
I just purchased a new set of gears for my 2000 wrangler.  It currently has the stock 4.10 gears and I am upgrading to 4.88.  The set I bougth comes with the install kit but I was wondering if this is actually something I can do myself or do I need to take this to a mechanic?

Thanks in advance.

If you take your time and have a arbor press as well as an inch-lbs torque wrench and maybe a dial indicator, you can do it yourself.  It's really daunting the first time though.  Once the stock gears are out there is no going back.  Still, I think if you have some basic mechanic skills you should be able to do gears.

How big of an arbor press would you need?  working space

One big enough to put a carrier in and press and pull bearings.  It doesn't have to be big for gears.  Bench top press would probably work fine.
