Title: Strange sound
Post by: neale_rs on August 02, 2007, 11:15:15 AM

I'm getting a strange sound when engaging the clutch (getting moving from a full stop, changing gears, etc.) mostly if I let it slip a bit.  It sounds exactly like when flimsy sheet metal is not bolted on tight and vibrates.  I don't get the sound when just going over bumps so I think it is something related to the clutch.  Any ideas?

Thanks

What about when you're parked, can you hear it?  Does it only happen when you're moving?  Is the noise constant or does it happen once once?  How are your engine mounts?  Transmission mounts?  Is your cat rubbing against the transfer case?  Keep in mind that when started from a stop and shifting gears, it causes the engine, transmission and transfer case to torque so it could be rubbing against something.

Answers to questions:

Never hear it when parked.

Does happen before moving if slipping the clutch on a hill.

Noise is not constant, happens for a while and then goes away.

Engine mounts in good shape, replaced recently.

Tranny mount good.

No cat, plenty of clearance around the pipe.

The clutch works well, maybe it is just something that vibrates just right when engaging the clutch... Can't figure it out.  I'll try tightening anything made out of thin sheet metal and see what happens.

Thanks

Got lucky, tracked it down to a loose heat shield.  Thanks for the ideas.
