Title: What inertia ring to get?
Post by: jfrabat on August 20, 2007, 03:46:44 PM
I have been reading a bit about inertia rings, and it seems they are a good option to improve the low-end torque the 4 squirels under the hood put out.  From what I read, it seems it improves low-end torque, and makes the engine harder to stall.  Besides, I need to change the clutch anyway, so might as well get this done, right?

I have seen good reviews for the Tri-County Gear one, but I dont know if anyone has had any experience with this.  Any other options out there that you would recommend?

I'd recommend it if you're going to be taking the transmission down.  Otherwise, it's a bit of a PITA and you might as well replace the clutch while you're at it.  The inertia ring does not increase torque.  It adds weight to the flywheel so the engine doesn't' slow down as fast.  This also mean the engine will take a bit more work to get up to those higher RPM's.  The downside is the engine won't feel as responsive as it once was.  When downshifting, you'll have to wait a few seconds longer for the engine to spin down otherwise you'll chirp the tires.

It won't make up for poor gearing so if you're think about getting it instead of going to lower gearing, think again.

I was thinking of putting a set on and not regearing yet; I am currently running 31's and not offroading at all.  But once I put on the 33's, I plan to regear to 4.88 to go back to the stock setup (more or less, anyway).  But I thought this would also be a good option to get the most out of the 4 banger (I dont want to switch engines!).
