Title: squeezing some power..talk to me
Post by: officer mike on August 30, 2007, 04:52:55 PM
Hey guys, I hav 6 inch lift, 35s  and 4.88's so obviously I wanted some power uprgrades and I got my self a flowmaster and a banks header and a nice intake and I really havent seen any great changes. .. my next move is the 4.0 TB. With my 4.0 HO i got such a difference with the flowmaster and the air intake and i was on 3.07s with 32s and i could spin the tires(  also was a stick). theres really no point to this thread... anyway get a good gain out of anything else i could try?  thanks

elec fan is a huge difference.  best perf mod beside 4.0 tb i ever did.  well regear ing was the best but best simple mod

zirgo makes a killer 16" electric fan that pulls a rediculous amount of air and doesn't pull near the amps that a taurus fan would... and if i remember right the zirgo actually pulls about the same cfm or maybe just slightly more...  you can find them on eBay for $120ish shipping for the top of the line 16" zirgo

i run a 16" advance auto parts "Imperial" fan.... it cools my 2.5 fine.... and it will cool my 4.0 just as well once i ditch this gutless box of squirrels next month, hehe

controlling the fan is almost MORE important than the actual fan itself.... their are some half-assed ways to do it... do it RIGHT.  use a thermoswitch plumbed into your cooling system.  use a quality relay... etc.  I like the SPAL fan wiring kit personally... it's yet to fail in any way :)

Do you have an auto?  I think the 5.38's are a perfect match for my 5spd and 35" and 36" tires.

Nope.  the grand will be obd i  while your jeep is obd ii.  It'll be missing the map sensor.  Find one from a 96 or newer 4.0 engine.

you can't put 5.38's in stock axles anyway... why would that even be a suggestion?

Who say's he's running stock axles?  He's already running 35's and that would be marginal at best with the D35.

Mine did also stock. When I lifted and added discos, I added hose clamps on the inside of the frame mounts on both sides. Haven't had a problem in 4 yrs.

who says he is NOT running stock axles?  believe it or not most people don't do axle swaps...

and you act like a jeep running 35" tires on a dana 35 is cray insane borderline idiotic.... my guess is that you spend too much time web wheeling (due to your post count) and not enough time on the rocks and in the mud traveling the many ORV trails there are across our nation.  \

I'm not trying to say that the dana 35 is a strong axle and great for 35's, but it will handle it if you have half a brain capable of communicating with your right foot while it's on the skinny pedal.  Dana 35's catch a bad rap because 90% (proven by a study done by D.C. yesterday) of jeep owners are web wheeling idiots who's internet friend's cousin keeps breaking them... not because they are a purely shitty axle.....

Thanks for playing... Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

With the stipulations officer mike gave, I'd go with the electric fan.  Then do the 4.0L TB and consider the Ford Injectors.  The fan will take a lot of work away from the engine.  Especially at higher RPM's.  The engine will also spin up faster because of the reduced work load.

The 4.0L tb will give you a better throttle response.  I've noticed it makes it really easy to idle the engine lower then 700rpm.  If it dips too low it's easy to catch.  Only problem is the PCM will rev the engine and then it runs with a higher idle for a little while.

The Injectors, I think are another cheap and easy swap.  They should be the same as the Denso injectors that are already in there but with 4 jets.  The biggest difference I've noticed with my Jeep is that the engine doesn't feel anemic when reving up to 4000rpm.  It will freely rev up to 5000rpm.

I did not feel a HUGE change with the ford fan, but I did feel an improvement.  I also installed the Mustang injectors (if I am not mistaken, mine have 2 jets, not 4).  I did run into problems with the 4.0 TB, as the jeep would idle at 1,500rpm's and would not come down (even after driving around for a day).  I think it is because there is some corrossion near to where the valve sits, and that is letting air through, making it idle faster, but I do not know...  I cant be the only person having problems with this, though, so there's GOT to be a reason my TB will not idle correctly.  I just have to find it!

You're not going to get HUGE improvements with anything short of a regear and/or forced induction.  OK a full blueprinting, overbore, head job and cam would net you decent gains also.  Most of the bolt-on's described so far though will net you a noticeable change but they do add up.

19# Ford Design II's (D5B) will have 4 Jets.  These are also known as Bosch Yellow Tops.  The 4 jets allow for better atomization of the fuel over the single jet of the stock injectors.  I'm not sure what you're using.

As for your idle problem, it's caused by a vacuum leak.  It's been discussed many times.

thanks guys, should I do the fan or the cam first? I will prob try and grab a TB from a junk yard this week after school. If I go to the ford dealer what do i say " I need 4 bosch yellow top injectors"? thanks again

I am the first one to say the d35 will be sufficient when it is babied. On the other hand i have seen a the entire tube twist itself right in two pieces inevtibaly leaving the jeep on 3 tires.. This also happened during a burn out on stock tires and rims HOWEVER the way it comes from the factory should be strong enough to handle its own power under the load that it came from, from the factory. If the jeep was on 31s or 33s then it would be somewhat deserved...(this wasnt me)

I kno jeeps arent muscle cars but call me an idiot if i enjoy spinning my tires here and there, and im not necesarily talking about in the middle of town on some pavement. And i love knowing that im never going to ave to worry about my rear axle. when i wheel, i finesse it like "im supposed to" but we all kno that there is some cases where u kinda have to horse it around. and im glad to know i have the strength should i need it...

Personally I thnk that you're just jeolous you dont have an axle other then your cute 35...

I think one of the best deals going to to buy 'take-offs' on ebay.  Ford Stock Design II 19# Fuel injectors are pretty plentiful and got for cheap.  Usually around $30.  You'll get 8 but you can always sell off four and split the cost.  You'll want to get rebuild kits for the injectors though.  This will include two new seals and a new cap.  The caps are a PITA to remove but do come off.

If you buy new injectors expect to spend around $200.  I need to do a write-up on them soon.

You may be right; mine looked exactly like the #19 ones (same color and all, and they said mustang, and were Bosch brand if I am not mistaken), so maybe I am mistaken.  For some reason, I remembered only two jets, though...

My radiator is dead so I have lined up a new one, I am currently shopping for an electric fan and a 4.0TB is already on it's way.  I will be doing all new plugs, wires, cap, rotor cause I am due.

After reading this thread I was thinking injectors as well, there are a couple up on ebay but I want to be sure I am getting the right ones that have 4 jets and not 2.  The stuff on ebay people seem to just be saying it's from a Mustang and thats about it, is there a specific model list or if the picture looks right then they are probably the 4 jet ones?  They are 19# injectors, I just want to make sure they are the right ones.

Also since I will be doing radiator, fan, TB and injectors along with the plugs and wires, anything else I should consider doing on that tune up?  I am at about 110K miles.

Thanks guys!

I'm not sure is any of the Ford's are 2 jets.  I like the Design III's better then the Design II's which aren't Mustangs.  Do you have a YJ or TJ, since that makes a difference when choosing injectors.  The 4.0L TB is a good idea.  You might also consider picking up an ebay TB Spacer as well.  They're usually around $35.  Consider the Performance Distributor Firewire kit.  It's very good and cheaper then Jacobs or MSD.  You get a cap, rotor, wires and a coil with the kit.   It will allow you to regap the plugs to .065" instead of .035" which will allow for a more efficient burn.

Oh when choosing a radiator, go for the all metal.  The plastic tanks tend to leak over time.  The metal radiators don't have that issue.

Radiator is stock replacement, getting it from a buddy so really can't beat the price, mine is just smoked.

93 YJ is what this is all going into.  I am not sure what is the difference between Design II and III or anything else for that matter, just started really doing the research this week so still learning.

4.0 TB is on it's way $15 from another buddy, can't beat that.

I was looking at TB spacers, if I can find one dirt cheap I will do it, otherwise I can't afford it.

I already have stock replacements for the wires, cap, rotor, plugs. They have been sitting in the garage staring at me for some time now.
