Title: Purple Cam NIB - What next
Post by: tjbliley on September 29, 2007, 02:17:54 PM
I just got a Cam for my 2.5. Its in a 98 TJ with 110,000 imles on it.
It has cat back and cold air intake. I am running 4.88's with 35's
right now. What else do I need to do to make this thing work better as
a total package?

What's the cams profile?  Without knowing that we can't really tell how aggressive the came really is.  Mopar made 5 difference cames in 3 stages.

It says on the tag Cam and Tappet Package For Very Mild Competition - Specs: Hydralic lift .440/.440 Duration 248/248 Overlap 32 Centerline 106.  I have no clue other than it has been hard to find anything for it.  I found this one and jumped on it.  Thinking of pulling another head from the year and having it completely rebuilt and installing it at the same time as the cam.  Also considering a header for the install at that time.  I think I found the 'Holy Grail', but I am not sure yet.  Everything is still shrink wrapped in the box.

Hmm, the .440 should read:

P4529657

Factory Engineered Hydraulic Cam and Tappet Package for Mild Competition Application 248-248-32* Duration, .440" Valve Lift, 108* Centerline

If it really is New Old Stock (NOS) then you'll want to have it cleaned off really well.  Most if nto all the cams were made back in the 90's and have years of caked on grease.  The came should come with a set of new lifters as well.

Forgot to mention what would be recommended;  Multi-angle Valve job.  Perhaps larger valves.  Port and polish.  Larger TB. Possibly larger injectors.  You probably want headers also.  A Hi-flow can't wouldn't be a bad idea either.  You'll probably want a wide-band air/fuel gauge to monitor the air/fuel ratio.  Better ignition setup would help a lot.  MSD or maybe even the PD Firewire setup.  You'd probably want to dynotune it to make sure everything is working together.  They might not be able to program your PSM though.  You might need a piggy back computer or a stand-alone setup.
