Hey guys, I was wondering if any has an answer for me. I just bought myself a full size 31 inch spare, can I use the old stock 9 slot 15x6 wheel? I just thought I would check before getting it mounted, it looks like it might work, but might the wheel looks very small. Thanks for any help.

What are your other wheels? A 31 will fit on there but it will be pinched a bit. I like how they look with 31's though.

Assuming that it is 31 x 10.5", it'll be OK on a 6" rim. The spare on my sons commanche is a 31x10.5 x 15 on a stock narrow cherokee rim.

I put the stock steel wheels that come from a sport or se, they have the 5 spokes if that makes any sense. The spare was an old school 9 slot though. I sanded it primed/painted a graphite. Came out quite nice but I was not sure if it will fit on the stock carrier. So should it fit with a 31x10.5? I really don't want to add extensions to the rubber stoppers.

I think they will fit on the stock carrier. If anything you might have to cut down the bumpstops since the tires are fatter. The other option would be to extend the tire carrier.

put the tire on the rim and mount the rim on the carrier backwards. so that the front of the rim is facing the tailgate

??? interesting idea.

it works my buddy did it with a 32 once

Unless the wheel has a flat face on both sides it won't work. I believe the 9-slots have a bevel.

Well, it fit....but the rear tail gate leans just so slightly becuase of the weight. You can't see it but I can tell when you close the gate, it catches a little. Any ideas, I tried to tighten it but had no effect. If I take the spare off it closes fine. :uhoh:

Mine leans a bit too. I just left it and keep it closed. if you don't want to beat up the latch you can lift and close it.

If I leave it on do you suppose it will eventually continue to sag? Seems inevitable I guess, I use the tail gate alot. Anyone got any ideas?
-
This is on a TJ? Suprising that a 31 would make it sag, rubicons come with a 31 from the factory.
For YJ's they sell tailgate reinforement kits - which get you up to the strength of a TJ tailgate. Only other easy option is a bumper mounted tire carrier.
-
it sags downward correct , and its a tj right???.. just space out the lower rubber bumper more. in theory it would push out the bottom more and straighten the whole assembly.

 Not too sure what you mean. The gate itself is sagging ever so slightly, you can only tell when you open and close the gate. The latch catches a bit. Maybe I'll just leave it, unless it will get much worse.

As long as the tire is firmly against the tailgate bumpstops, it should get worse. It's the vibrating that really kills the hinges.

Should? I hope you mean shouldn't  The spare does press very firmly against the bumpstops, I mad sure to check. Maybe I'll just leave it.

Tomato ,Tomato...
I've had a 34x9.5R15 on my stock tailgate for 4 years now.

maybe your best bet is to adjust the lower hinge on the bottom slide of the body loosen the bolts a bit and pull the door up a bit. I had a 31 x10.5 15" tire on my tail gate and it was fine all I had to do to make it happy was put spacers between the tire and the carrier so it was not to tight against the rubber stoppers. It should be fine hinge pins do wear so it might just be caused by wear so you can make up for it by adjusting the hinge

Doing that will exposed the unpainted parts hidden behind the hinges though.

isn't that why they sell touchup paint?

now I get what you mean...

spacing out the rubber stop will not keep the tail gate from sagging just adjust the hinge its not that hard
