Title: Rear license plate mount location
Post by: chrisfranklin on October 29, 2007, 03:38:02 AM
With the YJs you have the plate located over the gas cap.

I was just going to remount the plate below my spare tire, in between the "bumperettes" because my fold down bracket is bent up a bit. Was going to drill a couple of holes in the metal and screw the plate on.

Thing is getting to the backside of the metal bumperette mount where you can throw the nuts on these plate bolts is a challenge because it seems to require that you unbolt the gas tank skid to do it.

That's all you have to do right? (I don't want to spend hours getting a frozen-for-14-years, gas tank skid plate off only to find that I still can't access and fit nuts to the  bolts holding the license plate in place on the metal bumper piece).  Gracias.

No need to remove anything, you can get your fingers up behind the bumper without removing the skid.  I bolted my Pintile up through my bumper and the crossmember that way.  Although an easier way would be to just use some self tapping bolts, it's not like you are holding any weight.

idk about your state but in ny and de they require you to have ur plate illuminated at night.  with the plate there that will be quite the task.

I really like the one I got from ORO....and works great with the license plate/3rd brake light LED's.  Quick release, easy to mount...and I like it centered...and the lighting makes it legal.

The spare tire is a great place to mount a license plate. The ORO light kits are nice but I remember seeing a similar product somewhere that was cheaper.

It's from Koz Offroad here in MI.

The 3rd brake light kit from ORO isn't that expensive though....

AEV sells a LED kit for $29 I think.  (I need to get one. They look nice.) And yes, CA requires a real luminated plate.  I think all states do actually.  It's a Federal Law.  Currently, I don't have a rear plate at all though.  I've got a 3 month permit since I'm waiting on my Amateur Band License to come.

Grateful for the tip regarding the plate illumination biz.  In the middle of painting right now so I have my rear plate duct-taped to the passenger seat (rear soft top window is rolled up).

I need light on the plate at night (I forgot that the left taillight serves as the plate's factory light source), so I am probably just going to buy another fold-down bracket to serve for the time being.   Maybe try the other setup with the LED light when I am done with the paintwork
