Title: The Ultimate sub-$500 Upgrade
Post by: 99SENewbie on November 27, 2007, 09:54:53 PM
As I stated in my introduction, I have a more or less stock '99 SE. Just got a new sailcloth softtop. (love it btw)

Me and my dad have gone offroading a couple times (extremely hilly pastures... good fun) and noticed the wheels were particularly weak.

I think I'm going to be able to get some funds around for christmas, what does everyone think would be the best way to spend around $500?

What do you want to improve?

If I was going to choose one thing I'd say tires.  Otherwise, spread it around and buy little things.  Electric fan, 4.0L TB...  Maybe get some tow hooks if you don't have any.  A Hi-lift, first-aid kit, snatch strap, tree saver...

:) I don't know what I want to improve for sure. I've got stock jeep just begging to be not quite so much.  It's a daily driver and a weekend play-tool. Most offroading around here (I live in kansas) involves either mudding or pasture riding. I've considered tires as the ones I have have been slipping on the most steep hills. I've also continued rocker guards, both because of certain places I'd love to go offroad and to help my girlfriend get in without hurting herself (she's 5'1")

Maybe I'll end up going with something slightly less functional and just attractive... I'm not sure.

Armor first!!!
That step helps too.

Since you play in the muck and don't play in the rocks, I'd say Budget boost and some tires.

If you play in the rocks or tight trees, then armor is the best investment.

New tires will be hard to get for under $500.  I would recommend getting some used mud tires in good condition and some tow hooks for front and rear.

Winch especially if you go play around w/o a group, it's on the list for best mod on my Jeep, and it sure beats walking home.

if he's still stock then a set of 31's would be good and you can find used 31's all over the place since everyone pretty much starts with a set.  i would just look for the used tires and some accessories  like jeffy said.  essential things.

Good strap, recovery points, Fire extinguisher, first aid kit, CB, sway bar disconnects for starters IMHO.
