Title: Fuel Tank
Post by: black99tj on November 28, 2007, 08:38:51 AM
About a week ago, I melted my gas tank with a stupidly routed exhaust. I've been searching for replacement gas tanks for the TJ wrangler but am having trouble. Just wondering if anyone knows a company who makes replacements or will I just need to go OEM?

There are several aftermarket tanks, but most deal with limited space from longer wheelbase modifications. One is suppose to give an extra couple of gallons and bolt right in the stock location. They usually come with their own skid plates, but may use the stock pump. All this for better than $300-600!!!!  If anything, do a parts search on  Car-Parts  (http://car-part.com). Who knows, you may even find a tank that someone swapped out due to modifying the wheelbase. Just check the major 4x4 forums like Pirate4x4 and other large Jeep only forums like jeepsunlimited, jeepforum, etc.

If anything, I suggest that you upgrade the stock skid plate. I doubled a newer skid plate and haven't had a problem with mine on my 97 TJ. Another thing to add, you may want to mod the stock gas tank to gain a few more gallons capacity. Check out Gas Tank Skid (http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=3286.0)

Problem with aftermarket gas tanks is that most aren't tested so no DOT approval.  I think the last legal aftermarket maker was Aero.  You can find racing fuel cells as well as some aluminum tanks out there that are usually for rec. use only.

I thought you had to remove your gas tank before you could scrap your car or take it to a yard? Anyways, I'll just keep searching and asking some people with TJ buggies that may still have a tank laying around.
