Title: new top . whats worth the money
Post by: nofearblackstar on November 29, 2007, 12:19:15 PM
i need a new top cuz mine has just had it . hole rips and the passinger window hardware pin broke off last night

i want a top that can come on and off easyer then the stock . that thing just drives me nuts.

looking at the california top , the best one with a bunch of 12 diffrent configurations , I wanted to know a few things though

maybe if someone has one they could let me know
-how easy is it to get on and off in a hurry .does it still have weather strips that break your fingers when you try to get them in?
- are the windows still held in with the stupid zipper?
-how does it get tight to the frame . im asuming some kind of strapes ?
-Is it really worth the money or is it just an overpriced top?

thanks for any help . and if anyone that owns one would like to tell me how they like it i would greatly appriciate it

also my jeep is a 93 if that helps any

Look into the bestop supertop. Thats what i have and they come with everything you need, even a new frame that allows you to take the whole top off without having to remove the frame. And you get the option of tinted windows and no more stupid clips in to mess with by the windshield. An added bonus if you run a bikini top is that it uses the same from windshied trim piece. Hope this makes sence.

hey  i have the multi top from California top and it is alright.

''how easy is it to get on and off in a hurry .does it still have weather strips that break your fingers when you try to get them in? ''
-it is ok there are a LOT of peaces to get together to put it on and off.

'' are the windows still held in with the stupid zipper?''
-um yes they use a zipper and Velcro.

''how does it get tight to the frame . im assuming some kind of strap''
-it mounts to side rails and the windshield rail, other wise it sits on the factory roll bars.

''Is it really worth the money or is it just an overpriced top''
_that depends, are you on a budget?, what do you do for the winter? (if you have one, i live in Canada),
i got mine on sale i enjoy it in the summer  right now it is kinda cold.

by the way i have a 95 YJ and i got the 2nd one ever made for the YJ so Tim may have made it better.

I also have a California top on my 95. I like it alot. The zippers are way better than the stock top and it goes on and off easy. But it was a pain in the butt to get. The guy told me the tops where done and ready to go out. And he could send it that week. A few phone calls and 3 mounths later I had a new top. I wish I could say I am the first this has happend to but I am not. I wish this guy would get his act together or my next top will be a best top.

If you're going to get OE get a Replace-a-top from Bestop.  The replace-a-top will reuse all of your old hardware so you won't have to buy into new hardware, non-standard hardware.  Bestop is also the supplier for OEM tops.  You can get new Billet pins for your old top.

I do like the CA tops but you might want to go through a reseller so you know it's in stock.  I like the frameless tops since that lowers the Jeeps height by 6".  I don't believe they make a Multi-top for the YJ.  Although I do wish they did.  I like the flexibility of the top.  Although it's at the cost of having multiple parts and having to fit them all.  can't be any harder then the YJ's OEM top though.  That takes a good 5 minutes to take down ant 10-15 to put up (usually in the cold when it shrinks.)

Thanks for the heads up!  I love my hardtop for those times when I want a top.  I've got a Bikini top but I need a new Duster cover.  Mines meant for a softtop and I don't want to add the hardware just for the cover.  I think I could live with fastening everything every time.

If you like the CA top then find a reseller who has them in stock.  I like my HT and have been using it year around.  Then when the weather is good it's no top, time.

No, Supertops use non-standardized hardware.  The doors use a arched upper while your OE uppers are square.  They will work with full doors though.

I also have the bikini/Duster/rear cover top and i like them too, I dont use the duster mutch but i do like the bikin top. it fits nice and looks killer with the doors off. I too am thinking about a set of full hard door or at least some upper sliders for the winter. The zipper ones are just too much to deal with when its cold out.
