Title: HOLE MELTED IN PISTON! has anyone had this happen?????? help please!
Post by: stan98tj on December 03, 2007, 10:48:48 AM
My 2 week old 98tj 2.5l died last week. I had changed all plug/wires/oilfilter/oil/distributor/rotor/airfilter and it died on me on the highway. did a compression test and found no compression in one of the cylinders.  Took off the head and found a half inch in diameter hole in the #1 piston dead center on the top of it.  Has anyone heard of this??!! cylinder walls look good and i think ill just replace that piston rather than drop a new engine.  Im afraid i dont know what caused this to happen and im also afraid that it will happen again. $150 for a new piston and if it blows again thats better than 1500 on a new engine to have it happen again.  I would love a bit of help from anyone out there who may know the source of the problem
thanks

If it's really melted, then that cylinder was running really lean.   Bad injector, leaking head gasket, bad valve are the usual suspects.

I agree, it sounds like it was running lean.

It most likely a combination of running lean, hot and the ignition timing being off. check intake gasket, have the injectors tested for flow or do a pressure drop test after assembly make sure the ignition timing is right check the cooling jackets for obstructions ( might be a good idea to knock all the freeze plugs out and check around the outside of the cylinder walls for gunk same goes for the cyl head). Once all together check all sensor that are related to the temperature and fuel system feedback system to make sure that all of those are functioning correctly. Lastly when all together check operating temperature with a infrared temperature tester or something compareble. If all that is well you should have no more problem

Pictures are always a plus. Especially if their is carnage involved.
