Title: Starter needs shims?
Post by: dexetr30 on December 12, 2007, 06:49:56 PM
I installed my new starter tonight and it doesn't quite fit. It grinds a bit when turning it over and does not engage into the teeth on the flywheel. Do the 2.5's require the use of a shim? The o.e. starter did not have one. The replacement starter is after-market but looks identical to the o.e.

Mine didn't, but I ran into the same problem with my Toronado. Had to shim it back a little.

Well, I need the Jeep bad tomorrow so I cleaned all the terminals on the o.e. starter with a wire brush and some contact cleaner and reinstalled it for the time being. If I have time tomorrow I'll pick up some shims and give it another go.

I took a look at the scrape marks on the flywheel and it looks like I'll only need one as well.
