Title: Some last minute body lift questions
Post by: 95yjman on January 03, 2008, 01:34:31 PM
I'm putting a 1" body lift on my Jeep here in a few days if it warms up a bit.  I have a few little questions though.
Dose this vaccum hose look long enough?

I know its a vaccum hose but will it hurt to take it off and hop into another vehicle to go get another longer one then run back to put it on?
Second, in order to get the steering shaft to expand, will I have to loosen a small nut on it or will the thing just expand on its own?

Hmm, for a 1" lift, I never even bothered to do anything other then the body lift.  No extending of anything was required.  Although I did have a 1" MM lift.  If you're worried about the booster line, disconnect it at the booster then do the lift and see if you can reattach it.  As for teh steering, you're not really lifting it enough to cause any problems.  The shaft should expand by it's own.

I moved my motor forward 7" and that hose was long enough - should be fine

Really, was it the stock hose?

Thats cool, I think the hose will work, might be a little tight though.  So it shouldn't hurt it to be off for a little bit while the Jeep sits in the garage?

It's just a vacuum hose, won't hurt anything to disconnect it - unless you try to drive with it that way ;)

Nope wasn't planning on driving with it like that

I've used the stock TJ hose on a 2" lift with no problem, but I have to say that the hose looks a little short to me. Keep an eye on it when you wheel, when the body flexes you might pull it out of the booster.

The hose is the least of my problems now..I've got two of these to worry about now.
The metal part where my finger is, is stuck and won't come down when I jack up the tub.  I've hit with a number of air tools and used heat and it won't come off the body.  The two that are stuck just so happen to be the two with stuck bolts and broken off heads.  Anybody have any ideas how to get it to come down without having to cut into my floor?

Stick a bolt up the hole and start hammering on it.  The bolt is rusted inside the sleeve and you'll need to bust it loose.  Otherwise, jack it back up and use a pickle fork between the mushroom cap and bottom of the tub - but doing it that way you'll have a good chance of ripping into the tub.

Once you the body mount off, you're going to need to heat up what is left of the bolt and hope you can get it out with a vice grips or weld a nut to it.

So you took the bolt out already?  Smack it from teh side with a hammer and wood block.  It is not connected to anything and is jsut a sleeve.  It's probably stuck to the bushing and the bushing is stuck to teh underside of the jeep.

Pretty sure he's saying that part of the bolt is still in there.  Happened on a couple of mine when I replaced the body mounts.  They were rusted into the sleeves and only the head and first inch or so of the bolt snapped off.

When I started off doing my body lift and was loosening bolts, I broke the head off one.  The other I grinded the head off, so I have two body mounts where half the bolt is still in the body.  My plan was to rase the body and slide the puck in so the remaining part of the bolt and the the weight of the body would hold the puck in place.  The rest would get the new longer bolts and done the right way.  However when I started yesterday I couldn't get the two that still had half stuck bolts to let go of the rubber and metal thing.  I'll have to try some of things you guys said and see if it works.

With a cutting torch burn the rubber away then get the sleeve around the bolt red hot with a bit of luck it will heat the piece of bolt enough to let you spin it out with vise grips or a pipe wrench

I'd lift the body up if all of the other bolts are out.  Then grab the bushing and pull it off.  The metal sleeve should come right off as well.  Then take some vice-grips and grab the bolts and spray them with PB Blaster or other penetrating oil, then twist.

The metal sleeves come out? I did not know that
