TJ's don't use a stock CV/Double Cardon driveshaft stock in the rear.  Now if you're talking about an aftermarket driveshaft for a TJ, then again, it will depend since there are different lengths used for 4.0L's and 2.5L/2.4L's as well as manual and auto.  If it's custom then it will come down to actual measurements.  You'll need to measure the yoke to yoke distances.

The driveshaft is on ebay. I'm waiting to get a couple of questions answered. I'm about to put a 4" lift on my yj and was thinking about putting the SYE and cv driveshaft all at once. The item, jeep tj rear cv drive shaft. measures 19.5" from universal to universal when fully extended.  Here is the link- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200191261585

If it's the right length, then it'll work on a YJ with SYE.  If you havn't got your SYE in yet, it's going to be hard to figure out what length you need.  Best bet is to get a cherokee front shaft and have it shortened by a driveshaft shop (About $60) once you know your length.

Which year cherokee would I need to find?

Any year will work, you just have to look and make sure that it looks like what is in that picture.  There are a few versions which use a booted CV joint rather than a double cardian.

Since we are on the subject, what would be a good SYE?

ANything but a hack and tap.
Most places sell the OMIX ada SYE, I've installed 3 of them and they are beefy and the kit fits well.
Here's one place to get it.

Any opinion on a "mega short" SYE? Is it worth the extra money?

As much flack as the Hack & Taps get, I've never seen one go bad.  Although for the price of a H&T for a YJ ($100 more then a TJ) it doesn't make sense to go that route.

2 problems with the hack and tap that I've seen.
1) You have to run a flanged CV which eliminates all the savings of a hack and tap because you cannot use a cheap cherokee front driveshaft
2) You still have the extremely weak output shaft on the 231.  A full SYE has a fatter shaft where they tend to snap.

The Full SYE takes care of the breaks which happen here:   I've broke one this way and seen a couple others.

Are you comparing a stock shaft to a 32 spline Heavy Duty SYE?  Standard SYE's from Currie, Tom Woods, MIT and many others are modified stock shafts that have been cut tapped then heat treated. (They mostly sell HD shafts now though.) They have the 27 spline taper where the speedometer gear goes.  Then there are the larger HD kits. These bump up the thickness at the taper so it's 32 splines and stays the same thickness till the support bearing.  Now there are the Super Slim kits as well.  Those are really nice but you lose the ability to calibrate your speedometer/PCM unless you reprogram the PCM and that can only be done on TJ's, I believe.

Yes, I'm comparing the stock shaft that you would hack and tap with the most common full SYE's.  Any decent full SYE has an increased diameter at the speedo gear section.   Some places are selling cut shafts for 242's since nobody makes a full replacement shaft.

Jeffy, you had the bottom two shafts reversed.  Middle is a stock TJ mainshaft cut for a H&T, and the bottom is a YJ shaft.  The TJ shaft has the extra journals on the end for the seal, and a different hub surface that includes a groove since no roller bearings are used inside the TJ hub.  My YJ mainshaft was a rare breed, being a '95 it had similarities to both the TJ and YJ shafts.

That being said, I run a H&T and haven't had any issues.  I used a shortened front CV shaft from an XJ/TJ and simply replaced the front half of the CV with a flange mount to mate to the H&T.  Not as short as a standard HD SYE but it works.  I saved some $$ and used the TJ H&T with a TJ mainshaft and tailshaft housing.  A lot cheaper.

I've only replaced one broken stock mainshaft in a 231, and the guy was jumping his jeep.  It broken in the same place as in oldjeep's pic.  I think his wheels were spinning in the air, and when the front end landed they slowed down suddenly.  The remaining inertia in the rear tires caused the mainshaft to snap like a twig.

I think I'm gonna go with the super short SYE from PORC, it's only around $230 and it's a ton of extra driveshaft length.  The speedo will be close enough for the ECM to function correctly, that's all I need.

I bought one of those, and have not had any problems with it (had it in for about a year now).  In fact, I am not even sure if I received a PORC or an Advanced Adapters one, as the instructions it came with were from Advanced Adapters (I understand that the PORC one is a copy of the AA SYE anyway).  As for the shaft length, if you do plan on spending the extra doe, youcan go the route that I went with, and call Tom Woods and tell him your current dimensions before the lift, tell him the kit (lift and SYE) you are planning to get, and they'll send you a shaft with the correct measurements (they cannot guarantee that, but mine was dead on).
