Hello I am new here and was recently going through to older posts and found one about the fuel filter on the TJ. I have an 04 TJ SE, the problem that I am having is that when I pres the clutch in or slow down while in third gear it dies on me, and the check engine light is on. I read in the owners manual that the yellow check engine light usually means a problem with the fuel system. I was going to change the fuel filter and found out that it has a "lifetime" filter, and that you have to get the whole fuel pump assembly, that is from a previous topic on here. Is that true and does anyone have a suggetion on what might be the problem?

Go to Auto Zone and get them to pull the code. They will tell u what is wrong with it...

A check engine light could be any of hundreds of problems.
Try this:
Jeep off, push and hold the trip reset button on the odometer.
Turn key to run (not start), then back to off.
Release trip reset button.
Let us know what numbers appear in the odometer window. If it cycles through 0000000 1111111, etc. then you released the trip reset button too early.

I tried to get the codes and all that comes up says no faults, then it goes through all the lights and checks the gauges. I did it twice to make sure. The check engine light is still on. I am going to take it to auto zone to see if they can get something to come up but I called them the other day and they told me how to check it myself, and said if I cant figure it out to bring it in. So I am not sure if its worth me taking it to them or not. Any advice would be help full thanks.

The check engine light is on when it dies, and then off when you restart it? OR is the light on all the time?
If it's only on when it dies, that is normal - the light always comes on when the key is in the run position and the motor isn't running.

it is always on and I am going to take it to autozone

Why not read the codes (http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=3419.0) yourself?

I tried to but it says no faults, but the light is still on.

So what did Auto Zone Say?

well I found out that there is no autozone in the town I just moved to and after the 2nd parts store i stopped at that told me they dont have a code reader I gave up for today and am going to take it to checkers tomorrow. I dont have to much hope though. I explained what was going on and they told me that if it didnt show up when I did it, that it wouldnt show up when he did it. I am going to try. One store told me that there is "deep codes" and that they wont show up on the dash or with a average code reader, is there truth in that?

Not all codes will show up on the odometer...Like my CEL P0108 and P0172 and my PowerSteering Switch....Checkers do have a Code reader....

I don't know about 'deep' codes, but there are the regular codes that show up when scanned and there are also 'pending' codes that can be scanned. 'Pending' codes show that the computer has detected a problem but hasn't met the parameters to trip the check engine light.

I went to checkers today and the only codes that came up was p500. I was told that dealt with the speedometer. I knew that was messed up, put a sye and didnt mark the postion. Would that make the check engine light come on? The guy at checkers said the fuel filter, he didnt believe me about there lifetime filter. When he looked it up it cost 150 or so. Any suggestions on what to do.

its an 04 tj se, now i need to figure out why it dies every once in awhile.

P0500 (M)
No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
A vehicle speed signal was not detected.
No signal from the speed sensor will cause the jeep engine to die when clutching or coming to a stop. Get the speedo working again and all will be well.
What did you do wrong on the SYE that the speedo is not working?
-
And forget everything you've been told about having a bad fuel filter.
-
I didnt mark the position it was in when I took it off. I heard that there is four different position it can go in so just turn it 90 degrees. I hope that is all that is wrong with it.

Easy fix. Pull the speedo sensor out and find out what gear count the speedo gear is by reading the number stamped on it.
Next, find the number ranges embossed onto the outside of the black part that holds the speedo gear. There will be a number range on 4 sides of the thing.
Insert the speedo gear into the tailshaft housing with the appropriate gear tooth range at the 6 o'clock position, straight down. There should be a little nub on the tailshaft housing to line it up to but it's difficult to see.

Thanks that is really handy to know. Thank you

Dont feel too bad about this... This is something most people assume others to know, so sometimes a newbe can put their new speedo gear in and insert the Speedo Gear sensonr in the wrong position (say, like the ORIGINAL position even thought the tooth gear required it to be rotated), and as a result, the speedo would fall into the TC tail shaft... Then you call Quadratec all angry that they sent you the wrong speedo, only to find out your own errors!
Dont ask how I know all the details of what happens when you do it wrong!

the same thing happened to me. my jeep just shut off when i was on the road. i changed the oxygen sensor and did the reset thing and the check engine light still came on and still stalled out once in a while. i put the fuel injection stuff in everytime i filled the tank because i was told that the fuel was too enriched or something. its alot better but the check engine light still comes on.

Well its been awhile but I tried this and it is in the right position and it still dont work. I heard somewhere that I could have put in the speedometer drive gear in backwards when I put on the sye. Has anybody heard of this? I tried emailing the company that made it acouple of weeks ago and havent heard anything. I also emailed the company that I got it from and still nothing. Any help please.
