Title: Shocks?
Post by: jcsanders79 on February 27, 2008, 07:47:16 AM
I dented my rear shocks up pretty good and need to replace them.  What Kind of shocks would you guys recomend?  They have to be for a 4" suspension lift.  Can't decide if I want to just get new rear shocks or all four.  It currently has Rancho RSX shocks on it.

It all depends on how much you want to spend!  I think Rancho, Superlift, Skyjacker, and the like are way over rated.  My next shock will be a Billstein.  Haven't done much research on them yet but they are designed for the type of driving an off road vehicle does.  Rubicon Express also sells a good shock for the price>

As far as I understand, there are only a few shock manufacturers, and they OEM for all the other companies...  If I remember correctly, there were 3 major manufacturers, Monroe, Gabriel and some other one which I forget...  Could be Billstein, but I cant remember.  Anyway, in the case of the others, it seems to me you are paying more for name than performance.  Having said that, I have Deutschtech ones on my rig because they came with the RE lift kit.

If I was buying shocks, I'd get Bilstein 5xxx series (5100, 5120, 5150, etc...) or 6100 series shocks.  There was a time when everyone wanted Rancho RS9000's but those times are gone.

Skyjacker Hydro's because they are the cheapest and good enough.  Everybody here locally uses them on YJs (Nitros on TJs) and rarely if ever have any problems.

That's what I run. No complaints.

we have the rancho adjustable in our cj2a and they are nice for when you have extra weight in the back you can stiffen up the socks and then soften them up for when it isn't weighed down.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but I got cheap and decided to only replace the two rear shocks with the RSX's (it was still $100 :'() Instead of four shocks I got a warn steering box skid and some new Hella lights   Plan on being ready to test everything at my local club ride in March.
