Title: Cummin's Diesel Jeep
Post by: Jeffy on October 09, 2005, 07:15:30 PM
Vehicle Description

JEEP COLECTORS ! VERY RARE US POSTAL JEEP CJ WITH A CUMMINS 4B 3.9 LITER DIESEL ENGINE ! Back in the late 80's early 90's the US Postal service only had a limited few of thier Jeeps sent out and rebuilt with Cummins Diesels. They used the orignal frame and rear end. Installed a new fiberglass body, new engine and new TH350 transmission. This Jeep is fun to drive @  40+ miles per gallon ! I have lowered the reserve to what you could part this Jeep out for ! So you can't get loose !

I have 4BT Cummins engines if your looking to repower your gas hog !

Nice little engine.  ALthough they are TALL.  I wish they were easier to swap in CA.  Diesel's aren't smogged yet.

what does the swap  need?  I want to go diesal when I am done with my gas.  I think it would be great for wheeling if it is not a crazy swap.

Basically a complete drivetrain upgrade.

The engine only makes around 105hp but has something like 265lft-lbs.  You can use a 4-speed GM transmission to it.  Probably a 4L80e.  Although a TH400 would also work.  NV4500 will also work.

Then you'll need to upgrade the rear axle for sure.  You will also want to upgrade the transfer case.  A minimum would be a HD output shaft.  A better option would be to use a 241, 205 or a Atlas/Stak.  You'd also want to upgrade the front axle while you're at it.  You could get away with the D30 but it would be your weakest point.

Oh and like I said, the engine is tall.  You'll need a body lift and still might have to cut a hole in the hood.

That's what started this thread.  The auction was removed though.

It was okay...there is such a thing as TOO many mods...and that Cummins Jeep had too many.

Isn't there a real issue with the power to weight ratio with that engine in a Jeep??  It's real heavy, isn't it??
