My rig, from day one, has had a valve noise which I thought could possibly be the timing belt. Using the broomstick technique, I kind of located the problem at the valves, but now I want to know how I go about fixing it. Keep in mind that I only started doing mechanical work when I got the rig about a year and a half ago, and although I've done some things I always thought were outside my skills and experience, I have never touched the engine itself, so I have no idea what to look for, how to locate the particular valve with the problem, and how to fix it.
Anyone here feel like guiding me? I do have the Chiltons, Haynes, and Jeep Service manuals, so if you point me in the right direction, I guess I could probably do it myself (can you tell my confidence level has improved with my hands-on experience?), but I dont know how to locate the problem, or if this is something a shade-tree mechanic can do at all...
Thanks!

Shade tree mechanic and tool owner are totally different. Odds are if you have no training you should at least have help from someone that does. I would at least have someone confirm that the valves are even the problem.

2.5L's as well as 4.0L's tend to have noisy valves to begin with.

Mine is pretty noisy too. I've decided to just live with it.

Mine are noisy sometimes, its not that bad. When it gets bad enough, it will get a bigger engine.

lifter rattle? Solid lifters don't self adjust to wear.

Try running 1/2 to 1 qt. of tranny fluid in the engine.
My mechanics 4.0L was doing this. He found that when he went in and rotated the valve 90º that the noise would quit, for a while.

I think I will try to record an MP3 of it, and let you guys hear it; might give you a better feel to check if somethings wrong or not...
