Title: 94 YJ 10000Kms on rebuilt engine and valve train tapping noise ????HELP
Post by: Android20 on March 11, 2008, 11:38:35 PM
I would like some advice on what the tapping sound could be and how to fix it. It's only noticeable when idling and started about a couple days ago I put some engine oil treatment specifically designed to get rid of valve noise but that did not work. Thanks for your help

Is this your first Jeep?  2.5L's as well as 4.0L and 4.2L's have noisy valves.  It should die down a bit once the oil pressure is up.  Although an exhaust leak could be a possibility as well.  The rear most exhaust manifold stud tends to break off causing a leak.

If you know how to check the valves then it wouldn't be that big of a deal to do with only 16 valves to check.  Although it should have been checked when it was rebuilt.  6000 miles is nothing.

My TJ had a tapping at 114000 that started out like that and it ended up throwing a rod.  Don't just write it off as noisy valves.  These guys are quick to say Jeeps are noisy but if you notice something differernt get someone to look at it.
