Before I drain and refill just want to confirm plug locations. Here is a pic of my AX-5 from the drivers side. I looked at it appears there are no plugs on passenger side.
Thanks

No, that's not it. That 'plug' says DO NOT REMOVE on it. It holds a poppet and spring for the transmission.

I used that "fill plug" once and it leaves you with a low oil level. Was lucky to find out about the correct fill plug in time.

Tony,
I almost made the same mistake myself; the fill plug will be on the passanger side higher up. By the way, getting the bottle in there is a PITA, so be ready to be creative on how to get the fluid to the tranny fill plug!

they make a pump that screws onto the gear oil container that helps allot for filling up tranys and transfer cases... don't know what they call it but you'll know what it is when you see it.
-
Yea, I got a hand pump that is attached to the gear oil bottle and then pump away. So the fill plug is higher up on the passenger side. Will look again.
Thanks,

i used a long piece of clear tubing and a funnel fed down through the shifter hole in the floor board.

You can also just come in from the side between frame and body.
-
What oil are you useing to fill it I need to do the same thing real soon.

Pennziol Synchromesh right now. Redline MT-90 is also known to work well in the AX5.

Ever since I put Redline MT90 in mine, shifting is a heck of a lot easier, especially 1st gear! As a result, I am sticking to MT90 from now on!

I just had a look at my dads 97 TJ Sport its a 4.0 but the tranny is like Cromwells there is no plug on the passenger side.
-
On the AX5 it is hard to spot due to the location but it is there. Don't know anything about the AX15 fill plug location.
-
The plug is a PITA to get to.

Your not kidding it is a pain in the A@@ to get too. I uses 80-90w gear oil and it was a fun, dirty job....

Oh, dont even get me started on that one! I was using a hand pump to get the oil up there, and during one of the pumps, the plastic tube came loose, and I had a big gush of oil landing on my face! I am very glad I did this because I think the wrong oil had been used before (hence the hard shifting before and soft shifting after), but I would not be a happy camper if I had to do this all over again!
-
One more dumb question how much oil dose the AX-5 hold?
-
3.5 qts if I remember correctly...
-
Thanks I need to do this some time, cause I know lost some fluid when I floped a few weeks ago it runs fine but I know it has not been changed since I have had it for the last 3 years. :stick:

According to the Jeep Service Manual:
"RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT
Recommended lubricant for AX 4/5 transmissions is Mopar 75W-90, API Grade GL-5 gear lubricant, or equivalent SAE rated gear lubricant. Correct lubricant fill level is to the bottom edge of the fill plug hole. The fill plug is at the passenger side of the adapter housing Fig. 4). The drain plug is at the bottom of the case. Approximate dry fill lubricant capacity is 3.3 liters (3.5 qts.)."
Again, though, I recommend Redline MT90, as I have had great results with it...
