I thought about doing this myself too, but I understand the AX5 is made of glass, and not nearly as strong as the TF904.

yeah the ax5 trans is weak .Good for a very lightly moded jeep and a driver with alight foot . I broke the reverse gear in half on mine and now i have a rebuilt and it's ready to blow when it goes i'm puttin a nv4500 in. bet i never break it and have a 5:61 first gear ! only draw back is it weighs 200lbs

AX5 isn't bad behind a 4banger, don't let anybody talk you out of it.  You wouldn't want it behind a 4.0L or v8, but it's all relative.

I've got quite a few power mods, beat on my heep pretty hard, and the AX5 is holding up just fine.  Most reported problems relate to synchronizers, which is the factory's fault for using and recommending the wrong fluid.

The other big issue is that DC used a poor quality snap ring behind the fifth gear cluster. It breaks causing you to lose fifth gear. I am doing a trans swap right now. It wouldn't be your flavor though...

You could look at an AX-15 out of a six cylinder. That is a straight forward swap. It would give you the 5th gear you want and the strength that you need. It is arguably strong enough to survive mild v-8 power.

i think about put a SM420 in my tj :naughty:
i sure i would love that 7.06:1 first gear

i a easy swap and i dont need a overdrive, my tj is build for wheeling and not for the "autobahn" ;)

The bolt pattern on the bellhousing is different between the 4 cyl. & the 6 cyl.. Or can you swap bellhousings between an AX-5 & an AX-15?

Is the 30RH in good shape? I need an automatic, and I'm ultimately looking at a 700R4, but a stock swap would be a good temp fix. I could give you everything but the pedals, but you can get them on E-bay. (I could actually give you the pedals too, but I understand that they're a PITA to change.)

It uses a Dodge Dakota BH. There was a thread floating around here about it. There is a long thread over on Pirate.

I'm looking into swaping trannys myself. If you can find a AX-15 I would do that, seems to be a much better tranny then the AX-5.  I've also looked into the NV3550 which came in some of the TJs...
