Title: Anyone check out the FAQ?
Post by: Jeffy on October 16, 2005, 07:58:03 PM
Just curious on what people think of the new 231 FAQ I did.

I'm sure there is something I'm missing.

It looked pretty complete to me.

The only question I have is "is it accurate that some 231's came with 6 planetaries?" I have fought this battle and gave up because I did not have a dodge 231 to tear into. I know the 241 is "supposed" to be a 6 pinion wide chain 231.

Yes the Dodge and the HD units have a 6 gear planetary.  It has been documented before.

Some of the things ive been looking into as projects on my 4banger and would love to hear your thoughts on ..

axle over vs, spring under lifts..... is the cost worth it or the work for that matter? seems to me by the time you add up the tools and extras(drive shafts, angle meters, steering comps etc..) the soa is alot of work for someone who can get good performance out of a bolt on kit.. not to knock the soa, it  seems if you want extreme articulation that is the way to go. but for a DD?..

And if  per chance . one was to go with the Soa ive found little about the pinion angle set up for the front and the rear..and spring height ,are the soa's being done with stock or lifted springs .

the evil thought of going to the 4.0 has also popped into my head a few times enough that i have been serching for old cherokees to harvest from .i know that the whole line back to the transfer would have to be swaped and drive shafts changed.. but have only found 1 write up on this subject

lets see.. how about the cost of doing the tera low 4:1 kit and a sye for the 231 to just buying an atlas .......... $1500  to get parts for the 231 or $2000 for the atlas

axle swaps are yet another subject .. seems these people are getting the axles and cutting them down to stock width .. wich is alot of work in it'self .. get the alinement angle wrong and out comes the axle again .. whats wrong with keeping the axle wide.. seems like you would get more stability and a cool fat look

ill stop now before i get flamed up too bad for ranting on but these are just a few things floating around in my head

thanks again for the info it has been good stuff

Well the whole SOA thing is sort of discussed already in the How-To.  Setting the rear pinion angle is dependant on if you're usinga a CV shaft or not.

Both lifted springs and stock springs have been used but it really depends on some other variables.

Engine swaps haven't really been discussed since no one has bothered to do a writeup.  I could do one on the basic's but there will still be some things that are dependant on what parts you choose and if you do it legally or not.

You can basically figure out the price different between an atlas and a beafed up 231 buy looking at the Faq and adding up the cost.

There is only the D44 article in the how-to's.  Full width axles aren't legal in many states,  Not on that but they are too wide to fit on narrow trails.  Many states have flare laws but it's dependant on which state you're in.  Then if you go full width, is it 65" or 67-9"  Widths vary and wheel choice will depend on the buyer.

These are more like regular  forum questions and not FAQ specific things.

The soft top writeup is a good one.  It'll prove itself very useful to everyone when it comes time to replace the tops.

I think Grundar32 has a couple good questions that should put up as posts.    The 231 vs. Atlas is a great one, there's lots of info and argueing that could take place there.  Same with SOA/SUA & Engine Swaps, post 'em up!

That Faq can cover anything but I've been hitting factory stuff not a lot of people know this stuff.  It's going to take a while to get through all that stuff I have in mind.  I'm already working on another.

Problem with the 231 vs Atlas is that there are now currently several different ones with different prices.  (3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0)  The right one for one person might not be the right one for another.  Then there is the Stax and you might as well consider a KluneV again.  I'll have to think about it.

Takes me a good day worth of work to get an article complete.  That's if I get all the pictures gathered and edited ahead of time.  The two D44 articles were done as I was doing research for the winch.

I don't use my winch much so the cable lookds pretty good.  When and if it needs replacing I'm going to go with rope.  Amsteel seems to be the cheapest out of teh premade stuff.  Although I've heard you can make a rope for a little less but then you get more rope so it comes out as a better deal. Technora is some fancy stuff.  It's said to be stronger then kevlar.  The down side to making yout own is having to make an abrasion sleeve yourself though.

I do like the OD green Dyneema rope.

im pretty sure im going to go for the warn xd9500i i think that # is right and i guess it does make sense to  use up the cable that comes with it before swapping

Do you have another job besides doing all this research ?  just wondering because it seems like alot to do if your doing it on the side..

I currently own a M8000 that I bought years ago for $475 new.  It's got the older motor but gets the job done just fine.

I'm a contract worker right now.  On and off, I've been gathering stuff to add to my resume for a automotive media job.  So hopefully it will help turn something up.  Took a trip to Fourwheeler Magazine but I guess I wasn't impressive enough since the head, Jon Thompson and the VP, John Stewart both left soon after.
