Title: Need advice for removing old bushings
Post by: impboy65 on April 11, 2008, 08:54:51 PM
I just bought a polyurathane bushing kit. I'm trying to install it but i can't get the old bushings out of the spring eyes. Any advice or special techniques?

The bushings are two pieces.  You should be able to see a gap between the two half's if you take the steel sleeve out.  Then use a screwdriver or wooden down and start smacking.  You might try to spray WD40 in there.  The rubber bushings will stick to rusty metal like glue.  You'll want to try to stretch the bushing a little by sticking an awl from the outside between the leaf and the bushing.

I'm sure someone's gonna say use a torch...  I'd rather cut the ends off the bushing and press them out as a last resort.

You can also cut them out bit by bit.

Without a press, no matter what you do, it will be messy. Anything that spins will create heat and melt the bushing while cutting. I'm still cleaning my hole saw. You'll also need couple utility blades and a sharp scraper to scape the lining of the leaf to remove the rest of the bushing. They do fight back....
