Title: Chevy V6
Post by: enginethatcould on April 18, 2008, 11:09:51 PM
Hey guys, a buddy of mine dropped off a chevy V6 at my house today. He told me it came out of a wrecked s-10 but didn't know much more than that. I glanced over it and it seemed pretty clean and was TBI. I didn't have time to pull the numbers to check the size yet. I had a guy tell me that if was TBI that it had to be the 4.3L and that when they went to TBI that chevrolet did away with the 2.8L V6. Is there any truth to this?

Yes, the 2.8L was the predecessor to the 4.3L S10/S15 platform.  Early 4.3L's aren't really worth it though.  The 80's era 4.3L's weren't very popular had had a bad reputation because of internal balancing issues.  It became a good engine in the 90's when they started using the Vortex technology in the heads.  Those started off with CP Injection.

They made some s10 blazers with a tbi 2.8. If your engine kinda looks like chopped smallblock chevy its a 4.3.
You would want one with a balance shaft if at all possible they have a longer timing cover made of a plastic composite, those have roller lifters and have been made as an tbi engine, we run those in some ups trucks, tough little engine

Thanks guys for the information. Got called into work and still havn't looked at the engine any more yet. Are there any other characteristics to look for to see if this is the "good" V6?
