Title: Highway speeds
Post by: Bill M. on April 21, 2008, 09:48:18 PM
I've heard a bit about some people having difficulties maintaining highway speeds. I took my 4 banger on the highway, from Colorado Springs, to Pueblo, and I had no problems running 75+ mph...

It's all in the gearing.....

Vehicle height/size comes into play as well.

Is yours lifted with bigger tires?  And was there any headwinds?  I run 31" on stock 4.10 gears, and if there is no strong headwinds, I can go 70mph no problem; but put a headwind of more than 10mph, and it is a bit of a different story...  Then I have to drop to 4th to keep the speed above 60mph (I can still do 70 if I want, though).

Shes got a 2 inch BB and 31's. Granted its not super modded, its not stock lol. It was rather hilly all the way... but then again... I lost 5th gear....I only dropped it into 5th when I saw it was flat ahead..haha..  :koolaid:

My XJ has a 16 HP (danged TBI) or more loss on most of you guys... I only have a lift right now... but I hope I can keep close to the same speeds I have now with 31's... I usually can get to 90MPH, but that's just scary!

... Of course, Xj's are something like 500lbs or more lighter and a bit less of a brick shape...

How bad is the 4-banger with 4.10 and 35's?  I imagine you kind of forgot that your tranny is a 5-speed and not a 4-speed, right?  (or you have an auto?)  I am planning on going to 33's and keeping the 4.10 for now...  But later will go to 4.88's.

It's fine, you do have to keep the revs up especially up hill.   I've got an AW4 auto (4 speed overdrive)  and at 65 I'm not in overdrive ;)

my 4 banger has the auto tranny...yea i know..say what u want. ive noticed she hates hills and ill lose speed on hills-even gentle upgrades on the highway-and i have to sometimes floor it to get her to shift...otherwise ill drop down to 45mph lol.  with the new engine im not having trouble maintaining highway speeds anymore..but i do wish i had a few more horses under the hood...anything to give me a bit more oomph anything to counter the "hill" problem she sometimes has.

75+, and hills aren't an issue anymore.  I can take many grades in 5th.

This with 36" TSL's, 5spd, and 5.38 axle gears.
