kids' 95 YJ, 150k miles, AX5 manual tranny  - started making a new noise, sounds like a "sandpaper" shhhhhhhh or dry bearing when in neutral with the clutch out.  Disappears completely with the clutch pedal about half way down, comes back just a little when completely disengaged.  The clutch doesn't seem to slip, even though two boys learned to drive a manual in it.

In trying to guess how long to kick the wife's car out of the garage for this, I'm wondering if this just sounds like a clutch (new one going in, anyway), throwout bearing (ditto on new one) or if I'm looking at bearing(s) in the tranny.  If it's a tranny rebuild, then I'm going to have to negotiate better with the wife!

Oh yeah, drained and filled the tranny with new GL-5 gear oil - no change.  I intend to change that out with Redline after the clutch job.

 Thanks
 Greg

title should have said "t/o bearing" not "t/b bearing" ... darn glasses!  Is there also an Edit Post feature that I'm too blind to see?

it was the throwout bearing ... almost back together again with new clutch kit installed ... waiting on 2 new nutserts in order to put the skid plate back on.
