Title: Jet Chip + Firepower ignition
Post by: RKBA on May 22, 2008, 07:16:10 PM
Is anyone running both a Jet chip and the hotter coil system at the same time?  I am interested if they complement each other or not.

Thanks

I am, and I like the combo.  The gains got ate up by new tires, but without them she'd be a real pooch.

I really don't think you need a hotter ignition system, especially with such short plug wires. I bet a dyno test would show little or no actual gains. The chip probably just adds a little ignition timing. Too bad we can't just advance the distributor and get more timing that way.

Before I put the turbo on, I added an electric fan, 4.0L throttle body with the intake ported, K&N, Ford 19# injectors, and a better exhaust system. It made a slight, but noticeable difference. By no means was it anything close to even peppy though. :)

What Rob said (minus the turbo ;)).  I have all that stuff plus the stage I chip (want a stage II now) and it all made a little difference and with the chip it did all kind of pop together and I have stock ignition.  I don't know where you are with gearing but I'd focus on that before a replaced a working ignition system.

My TJ is already geared properly, I always do that concurrent with oversized tires.

I am running the Jet stage 2 with a 4.0 TB and a generic turbo muffler instead of the bashed up stocker.  The Jet does indeed advance the timing throughout the curve and makes a noticeable difference in idle quality and throttle response.  I believe that the advanced timing along with the large plug gap from the hot coil might be a good pair; just looking for someone's actual experience with that.
