Title: more air intake
Post by: dudley on June 18, 2008, 09:47:09 AM
What's the best option for air intake as to not loose low end torque since it seems that happens if there is too much air, like with a CAI?  I have heard opening up the hole on the radiator shroud that is behind the left headlight, directly in front of the air intake for the stock air cleaner is a good option, adding then a stock K&N filter.

Well, I've run a custom conical K&N filter and eventually went back to the stock box.  I've fun a Fram paper filter with the venturi as well as the turn down installed.  I have removed the venturi and the turn down but then ended up reinstalling them.  I now run a Fram AirHogs filter with the stock setup.  For me, I found the torque in the low to middle range more important then being able to rev high and getting a bit more hp at the higher speeds.  Right now my engine feels stuffed up past 4000rpm.  When I had it open I could easily rev to 5000rpm and still have some benefit but then mid to low end torque was down.

I don't think you'll get a definite answer though.  Most people don't switch back and forth and because of that they forget what they have lost.

On previous one with this quote, I hit "return" accidentally!     Anyway, thanks.  I will keep it stock, try the airhog, but open up the panel behind the headlight  enough to get more air at highway speeds since mine is a "street jeep", but at lower speeds, should be normal, thus not affecting low end torque.  I will open it up in a way that will not let water get in when it's raining!   :thumb:
