Title: Tera Low input
Post by: neale_rs on June 27, 2008, 08:00:48 AM
I'm considering getting a Tera 4:1 with 21 spline input to match the AX5 but have a long term plan to swap in an SM420, at which point I would like to have the 23 spline input.  Does anyone know if the Tera 4:1 input can be changed like on the regular NP231?

Thanks

All that is being changed is the planetary gear set for the lower reduction. It would seem to me that you could. I have no experience with this though...

I'd agree BUT you never know.  Call Tera and see what they say.  I know with something like the Atlas, they want you to ship it back to them.

i don't know for sure if you can change the input. in my head somewhere it is saying yes.  but, i've been wrong many times before.  i do know that you will love the tera low it's the greatest wheeling with a really low and slow gearing.   :weee:

Thanks for the comments.  I'll contact Teraflex and then post what they say.

A friend of mine is doing the same thing, Tera will insist you ship the 231 to them to swap inputs.  It's worth the money, then they'll continue to cover it with their great warranty.

Will they even warranty it in Mexico though?  Shipping it back and forth would be $$$.

Here is what they said:

"Yes you can swap out the 21 spline input for a 23 spline. It
requires timing the planetary gears before you reinstall the input. If your
not comfortable trying that kind of swap you can send the planetary to us
and we can install the input."

Being in Mexico does complicate things, the hardest part is getting it back into Mexico without a new receipt.  I could get the warranty by having the unit shipped to and from a US address and handle the import export myself.  Amazingly it is often cheaper to buy from local shops, it seems they get dealer discounts and can often deliver in Mexico for the same price as in the catalog without any additional shipping or importation costs incurred by the buyer.

What kind of problem - don't know how to change it, or it's not fitting?

IIRC there are 5 different input shafts.  Novak has a nice writeup on it.  http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np_nvg_input_gears.htm

Probably should have ordered one from Novak when you got the transmission.  Nice choice by the way!

I beleive most of the ones that are used for conversions are the ones from an AX-15, which are the short 23 spline shafts.

eric from novak said that this is the right inputshaft

should i open a new thread when i give you infos about the swap :puzzled:

Wow, that's a nasty looking hack for the starter.  Have you contacted Novak to see what's up?

I hope you are planning on cleaning up those cuts.  Having a bunch of sharp notches like that is just asking for cracks.

Is that a conversion bellhousing, or just a stock piece off something?

I think you ignored this part of the directions:
This kit requires the use of a new, gear reduction starter like the Mean Green #3212  (typ. cost $250)

You have already done a lot of structural damage to it.  I'd make sure that there is no way that you can smack it on a rock now.

What mistake did eric make?  Looks like you tried to use a stock starter on a kit that requires a reduction starter?

i told him that i need all the parts for the swap because here in austria is no chance to get missing parts :nono:

we pay here for a stock starter 700-750$ and if you find a company who sells this mr. green you have to wait 3-4 weeks and then you pay so much that you kill the salesman :brick:

this was the only option for me!

i live not in the states, for me here its not so easy :'(

Well good luck in your competition with the granny gear and the terra low your Jeep should really crawl at a snails pace. Once you fix the bellhousing and maybe weld an extension on the belly up fior the trans it will look nice and work like a champ

Thanks for sharing your experience with this project.  How did it go at the competition?
