Title: The curse of the AW4
Post by: oldjeep on July 05, 2008, 06:59:05 AM
I'm beginning to think that my transmissions just don't like me.  As you may recall, I installed an AW4 in my 2.5L YJ.    Worked great for a while and then I:
1) exploded a flexplate.
2) replaced flexplate but pump bushing got trashed and was leaking
3) replaced pump and convertor - tranny worked for a few miles and then crapped out (ate clutches)
4) replaced tranny (using same convertor) - tranny worked for about 50 miles and then crapped out (ate clutches)
5) just completely rebuilt a tranny
6) Ordered a new convertor - shows up hanging out of box - trashed
7) got another convertor Thursday and installed tranny
8) Testing out on jackstands yesterday, shifting great - but leaking from bellhousing

So today I get to pull it all out again and replace the (hopefully) nicked TC seal

would be nice to actually drive it at some point this summer.

A new record 2.5Hrs to remove, replace the TC seal and reinstall. Seems to be working well now. No leaks (yet) and it's shifting well.

Good luck!  Let's hope it works well for a few years now at least.

I sure hope so.  If I ever have to pull that tranny again I'm buying a real trans jack.  Had enough teetering the trans/tcase on a floor jack.

I'll probabally pick up 1 more rebuild kit and rebuild the other trashed AW4 I have - as a spare for my kids comanche or just as a $$ making excercise
