Title: Lost all my TC fluid in the driveway!
Post by: jcsanders79 on August 05, 2008, 03:41:35 PM
I have recently put a Tera low 4:1 in my Jeep and today I put it in 4 low and lost all my fluid.  It looks as if the fluid is coming out where the TC meets up with the transmission.  Any suggestions on what might have gone wrong?  I have been driving it with and it has been in 4 low before.  Thanks.

Update.  It wasn't my TC fluid (well I think because the fluid is pretty full).  When the Jeep is on a hill and in drive (doesn't matter if its 2 or 4 wheel drive) there is a steady stream of fluid running out of where the TC and transmission meet.  When I put the tera low in should I have installed anything on the transmission?  Oh and its an auto.

Sounds like one of your seals is bad.  There is a seal on the input of the transfercase and one on the transmission adapter.

Couple options,
1) you roached one of them putting it together
2) your TC input shaft is too short and not making it to the seal on the tranny adapter
3) If you removed the input on your tc, you installed the retainer the wrong direction and the drainback hole is covered

Oldjeep, thanks.  Your right.  I need a seal extension.  How F'n stupid that you order the TC by year and model  and transmission type and they don't include the seal!!!!  Spend X amount for a TC and they don't give you the stupid extention.  Also they say older models might need the extension, older models of what?  Since it was introduced in 88' I figured the TJ was not an older 231!!!!!  I guess I'm lucky its an easy fix.  I just don't look forward to pulling the TC again.

Is there any possibility that not having the extension screwed anything else up?  ie seals.

Nope, shouldn't have caused any problems other than the leaking

I was gonna guess input shaft too short to engage the seal.

Contacted Teraflex and they said I should have received the extension seal, they are putting it in the mail today.

Goes to show that its a good thing to read inclosed install instructions on page 1 left bottom corner it states that with an automatic trans you need a seal extension. Reading this stuff and comprehending it would have saved you a bunch of time and work. I especially hate doing things twice, By the way installing one of those things is pretty easy got mine done today, got a pretty good deal on it from groupbuy 4x4

Yep it sure does.  If it wasn't in the kit then you were suppose to call.  I was told by Teraflex that the TJ didn't need the seal extension.  Had no reason to argue since the top of the instructions stated that some older models automatic models needed it.   Called back after the leak and they found that it was supposed to be used.
