Title: TJ flares
Post by: 95yjman on August 09, 2008, 01:59:11 PM
I picked up a set of TJ flares for my YJ.  How hard is it to put these on? Anybody know of any write ups on the net for these? I'm gonna have to cut the body a little bit aren't I?  Also is there any kind of polish I can get to shine them up some and maybe get rid of some scratchs?

They're pretty easy to install.  I covered the fenders with masking tape, then used a couple clamps to hold the flares in place on the fenders.  Then trace the flare opening and cut just above that line.

For the rear most part of the rear flares, cut right up to the inner fender support without cutting into it.  This will put the front of the flare almost flush with the inner fenderwell.

For the front flares, the cut line at the back of the flare will be almost flush with the inner fenderwell.

I used a jigsaw to cut mine.

I use Mother's "Back to Black" on my tj flares.  It wont help scratches,  but helps bring out the color and shine evenly.

I took them off the Jeep, sanded them with fine brilo, wiped them down with acetone and then sprayed them with the Krylon made to adhear to platic in a matte finish.  Looked great ad they have held up for 3 years now.

"FOREVER BLACK" is also a very good product. Find it on ebay @ about $15.00

Best thing I've used to bring back the finish in flares is a heat gun. Start far away, and apply heat evenly, and they will look great.
